The problem is that (I think) you have to re-build the queries, the macros and all the forms...

you are most likely correct. though if you have a large amount of data, it would still be worth it.

besides, i think people should use SQL anyway =)

Databases really are an area where open source has made some great headway. Partially it may be since they're similar to compilers; it's a fairly well defined problem. The amazing thing is how performance for both postgresql and MySQL has grown over the years to the point where, for a small business, there really aren't much reasons to purchase any professional database application. The only remaining problem is applications. Either users need to rebuild their interfaces (a place where FileMaker still shines) or they need to contract out a redesign of whatever business app has the database hard coded in it. Not all business apps really have nice abstracted interfaces to swap different databases in and out.

The next part of database work that really needs open source help is Crystal Reports. I think folks are working on it, but most folk I've seen still haven't found a good OSS solution for it.
