PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 11:33 am    Post subject: NeoOffice on a Flash Drive

I have a problem and since I am new to this forum, I could really use your help. I have a 1GB flash drive I was able to install NeoOffice on and on the computer I was installing from, it seems to work well. But, unknown to me at the time, I can't seem to get the application to run on any other machine (which was part of why I wanted to use NeoOffice on the flash drive). According to the Console Utility App, the message was:

May 1 08:23:01 E422018038TRmS105 Classic[849]: AUTOUPDATE ERROR: problem setting up path to 'scrÆ’', path Scripts, err: -5000

dyld: Library not loaded: @executable_path/libcppuhelpergcc3.dylib.3
Referenced from: /Volumes/TERRA UMBRA/Applications/NeoOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/soffice.bin
Reason: no suitable image found. Did find:

/Volumes/TERRA UMBRA/Applications/NeoOffice.app/Contents/MacOS/libcppuhelpergcc3.dylib.3: file to short

May 1 09:00:26 E422018038TRmS105 crashdump[1183]: crash report written to: /Users/teacher/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/soffice.bin.crash.log

So I am guessing that I need to install some other files on my other computers in order to get Neo Office to work. Which ones and how do I do it (installer? custom? Can't I just selectively install some files for it to work? Ideas?). Ahead of time, thanks for all your help.

What is in the crash log file at /Users/teacher/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/soffice.bin.crash.log?

Also, you're not trying to run NeoOffice on one of Apple's Intel machines, are you?

Also, not sure if it's related, but the name of the flash drive seems to have a space in it. You may want to try removing the space. I think that everything should be fine on volumes with spaces in their names, but to be honest I haven't tried it myself.

Patrick asked:

"What is in the crash log file at /Users/teacher/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/soffice.bin.crash.log? "

So far as I know, this is just the crash report for the system when the NeoOffice app failed to start up.

As to weather I am using this on an Intel Mac, nope. I am using only PPC's at home right now. I'm still wondering what files the system ist trying to access that it can't find on the Flash drive. Any Ideas?

Yes, I know that. I want to see its contents.

The error messages make this obvious: Mac OS X cannot read the NeoOffice binary files. It is finding the files, but Mac OS X thinks that they are corrupted. Hence, you are seeing the "file to short" errors.

Try copying the entire NeoOffice.app folder from your Flash drive to your hard drive and run it from there. If it runs, then that particular Mac OS X machine is not reading your flash drive correctly and it is a Mac OS X problem.

Thanks ed, but I don't think it should make a difference what the name is as long as it is fine with the HFS+ architecture. But, in a pinch, I'll try anything.

Thanks Patrick, I'll give that a try and let you know what happens with the move. Do you still want to see the contents of the crash report? Let me know.

Only if NeoOffice crashes from your hard drive. If it doesn't crash when run from your hard drive, then there is something about your flash drive that Mac OS X's dynamic library loader is not handling. Mac OS X is computing the correct path, but it just can't read the NeoOffice binary files.

BTW, which version of NeoOffice are you using?

PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 1:09 pm    Post subject: Addition Info on the System

Patrick, et al

Talking with my computer instructor friend at work, he recommended that I give out some additional information about what I am doing:

[1] There is no system on the flash drive

[2] What fiels doew Neo Office install into the Library, etc?

[3] Is it possibly searching for files in the Library which don't exist because they were not installed on other workstation? Only app Neo Office is installed on USB Drive.

Thanks again, guys.

Marcus

P.S. Oh, what ever the newest version of Neo Office is, I just downloaded on Saturday night, is what I am using.

Neo does not install any libraries in system folders. All libraries are within the NeoOffice.app/Contents/MacOS folder within your NeoOffice.app installation. No custom changes to your system are required to run NeoOffice.

One more thing to consider trying is downloading and installing Neo 1.2.2 and see if you get the same errors. If you don't get any errors with Neo 1.2.2, then that will give me a clue where to dig deeper.

PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 1:47 pm    Post subject: Reinstall

Patrick,

Thanks for the info. If this works then I should have an office suite that will work on the flash drive and be seperate from any one computer (a portable office suite)? This is my goal, of course. I noticed on the downloads section that I didn't download any patches for Neo Office 1.2.2. I need to do this first before I unistall and reinstall, right? Thanks.

Yes, Neo 1.2.2 does not need any patches.

BTW, while your NeoOffice binary will be portable, NeoOffice will store your user preferences within your home folder so those aren't portable.

PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 2:17 pm    Post subject: Possible Solution...

Patrick,

I think I need to reinstall Neo Office 1.2.2 but in a different way. I origionally installed the Office Suite directly to the Flash Drive. But, now I think I need to install the suite to my hard drive and then move it over to the flash drive because the USB was just not designed for that type of activity. What do you think?

I think you've wasted enough of Patrick's time on this.

Please give it a rest until you know what you're doing.
