Hi folks,

I'm looking at moving an existing spreadsheet from appleworks to neooffice. As part of the process I'd like to yank some data from the spreadsheet and insert it in a database.

Much to my surprise, I've found it to be very difficult to provide a simple way to insert relational data with a single form or table.

For example, my products database references a vendors database and a product catagory database. This was easy to do using primary keys and relational key fields. What I want to be able to do is create an interface where the user will be able create a new product and rather than manually inserting the primary key value for the related tables, simply select from a field in that related table and have the primary key automatically inserted in the products relational key field.

Seems to me like this is pretty basic stuff but so far I've not been able to come up with a way to do it.

Am I missing something? Pointers anyone?

Thanks ,

Eric

If I understood what you need (excuse me but my first language is not english), the way is quite simple.

So create your tables and make the relashionship you need.
Create a form, insert a combo-box and link this combo box to the table where are item to choose. To link the combo-box to the list you have entered in a table, ctrl-click the combo-box, choose Control and on tab "data" and choose your table with the list in "data field

If you want you can also add manually options entering them in "properties: combo box -> data -> List content. You have to enter your options like "option 1";"option 2";"option 3" etc.

Tha's it. Hope my explanation is compleate.

Thank you - that worked. Is there any way to get this functionality in a table?

You mean in a writer document?
Don't know, I never use it . I tried for few minutes to find a solution but without success.

No, I meant in a table with rows for each record, similar to a spreadsheet. Is there a way to modify the table to use a list to select fields in a related table?
