Hi,

When im quitting NO my MacBook it goes wild. CPU load is @ 100% and it takes a minute or two for NO to disappear from the activity monitor... Any advice what to do? I run NO 2 with patch 12 on a 512MB core duo MacBook.

btw: when doing the same on my G4 (2x1,25 & 1700MB) with the same version of NO it quits as fast as other programs.

Were you running many applications at the same time ?

Memory could be an issue here. 512 MB is enough to run NeoOffice, but if you are running other applications in the background (especially if they require Rosetta), you could be a bit low on memory. Have you also checked the disk activity when NeoOffice is quitting ?

My guess is that as you quit NeoOffice, you're freeing up a ton of memory, which means that virtualized memory on the hard drive (the OS, other applications, etc.) can now be loaded to actual RAM... which means a lot of churning disk activity...

Just a guess. Bet you anything more memory would fix this.

I run NO together with Preview, Grapher, Text Edit and iTunes. Nothing else.

... i cant imagine that those applications need so much RAM that it takes a minute. Whatever, i need to get some more RAM asap.

What about Dashboard ? This "app" is particularly memory-hungry ...

and Haxies, and large number of fonts, Virus scanners, and more.

Only 512 KB Memory is probably the biggest problem, but you should check out Troubleshooting_Tips on the Wiki. It's surprising what can cause problems. My running Folding@Home cause major speed problems in earlier versions.

More RAM can only be a good thing. Even if it doesn't solve your NeoOffice problem (which does look like it's memory-related though), other apps should see an increase in performance (depending on the application, it could be significant) Smile

Another way you can check if this is a problem is by using the activity monitor:

  1. Prior to quitting (or other operation), open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
  2. Switch to the "System Memory" tab
  3. Check if you have any "green" in the pie display...that represents free memory. If you have none, your computer could probably benefit from having more RAM Smile
  4. Switch back to Neo for launching/whatever
  5. While it's bouncing/quitting, go back to the Activity Montior. Check the numbers next to "Page ins/outs". If these numbers are increasing, then virtual memory is being used (the hard drive is used as more memory)

Thanks Ed,
Here are my results (PowerBook G4, 1GB RAM) running
PathFinder, SeaMonkey, Neo, EarthDesk, wClock, Terminal & fah4 (Folding@Home), Activity Monitor (I usually leave this running), Dashboard (inactive), ....
Wired: 113 MB - red
Active: 371 MB - yellow
Inactive: 457 MB - blue
================
Used: 942 MB - black

Free: 81 MB - green
VM size: 8.97 GB

So on an average use day, I only have 81 MB free on a 1 GB system.
Having less memory would greatly affect how my system runs.
