When typing words with diacritcial signs a lazy work method - or should we just consider it to be efficient - is often to type the word the wrong way without diacritical signs and let the correction do its thing.

I remark the following.

I need to type the word: enquête (which is Dutch for survey, we borrowed it from the French)

so I type: enquete

- if I continue with a space it is being autocorrected to enquête.
- if I leave the line - do an arrow up or something - it is not corrected but it gets a red underlining from the spell checker instead.
- if I continue the word with a dot, question mark etc. it is also not corrected but gets the red line from the spell checker too.

This does not feel really consistent to me.

This sounds like the behavior I would expect from NeoOffice/OpenOffice.org. Autocorrect will usually only work if you type a space after the word, or press return (not sure about this one).

If you add a punctuation mark to a word without a preceding space, the program will consider it is part of the word, and that word will always get underlined because the app won't be able to find the word in any dictionary. As far as I can remember, I've seen this behavior in all of the word processing applications I've used.

The Dutch spell checker is horrible anyway since it does not recognize plural forms (-s or -en). And it had problem with some composite words.. I often turn it off to avoid frustration..

Best wishes,
