I love Wikipedia, and I use it often, but I know that it is not always current, nor error-proof. So I am happy to question it on occasion.
The Wikipedia reference on NeoOffice makes this comment:
NeoOffice is based on that package,* replacing the X11 interface with one built using Apple's toolkits (Java, Cocoa, Carbon) for "native" Mac OS X applications.
* "that package" is the OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X (X11) package.
Is that still the case? I thought not.

Good catch. AFAIK, NeoOffice is now built off the Linux source, rather than keeping up with the Mac tweaks. Though many of both should be integrated with the main trunk anyway, so who is to say what.
Patrick, do you want to make the authoritative statement here?
Thanks,

Yes, we do not use the mac-specific cws or branches any longer. We do our work directly off of the release version of the source code for Windows, Linux, and Solaris. As the build support has been integrated into the mainline for some time, we no longer use any mac-specific OOo branches (which was more just in the 1.0 days).

Thanks, Ed.
I take it the Novell work is a set of patches that is like a separate workspace on top of one of these releases? As is Neo (a complex one, but still).

Ta chaps.
I changed the wikipedia entry to read
NeoOffice was formerly based on that package, replacing the X11 interface with one built using Apple's toolkits (Java, Cocoa, Carbon) for "native" Mac OS X applications. From the 2.0 Beta onwards, it is no longer based on the X11 port, but works directly off the release version of the source code for Windows, Linux, and Solaris.
Think it makes sense now.

Tanks,
Question: Why does the first paragraph say: "It implements nearly all of the features of the corresponding OpenOffice version, ..."?
Is there something that Neo leaves out that is in the OOo X11 version?

Yes, the Novell work is done in the same approach as us (but different technically). We both pull the fundamenal OOo code from a particular release and then layer our own modifications to the code on top of that original base. ooo-build uses a pure patching mechanism where they apply diffs to the checked-out code; Patrick's mechanism works at a module-by-module level with symlinking to unpatched code. Patrick's mechanism is by far much more friendlier to doing binary patches to the code and really is the reason our whole patch mechanism exists at all. It is a lot friendlier to developers who focus in on specific portions of a large source base and allows for some more meaningful cvs diffs.
Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages; for the kind of work that we are doing here right now, however, Patrick's approach is probably the better. ooo-build is doing much more "whole product" style development for which their approach makes more sense, I guess.
Is any of that coherent in the slightest?

Yes we provide no way for the user to "take out" the Aqua look or the special sex magic code that makes it possible

mutter, butter, mumble...
Ok ED.
I "meant" that Yes, some of use (barely) understands your comments about code patching. It was interesting. tanks (kinda like how Neo can add Dictionaries without having to download a complete version! Just add/update parts)
