OK, this is clearly a bug which is present in NeoOffice OSX but does not occur in OOo 2.2 under WinXP or OOo 2.1 under Ubuntu Linux (let's hear it for Parallels!). Easy to demonstrate:

  1. Open a new default document
  2. Type 5 or 6 lines of any text
  3. Select Format > Page... and click [Page] tab
  4. Page Top Margin currently 0.79", set it to 0.25"
  5. Click OK, get message "The margin settings are out of print range/ Do you still want to apply these settings", Click YES
  6. Click icon for Print Preview -- looks great!
  7. Return to document view
  8. Select File > Print (or click print icon)
  9. Click Preview for OS X preview
  10. Click OK
  11. Observe that the first two lines have been cropped from your printout!
It is not possible to set a top margin of less than 0.55" in this version of NeoOffice; if you do, the top of the text is cropped. It is possible to do this in other versions of OOo 2.x.

I do not have an ID for entering a bug, I would appreciate it someone else could verify this and enter it.

Thanks,

Dave Cortesi

First of all, remember that NeoOffice 2.1 is based on OpenOffice.org 2.1 codebase of and not 2.2.

This seems to be a bug we have already seen and it is been fixed with patch 1. Have you downloaded it?

Thank you for pointing out patch 1. With it installed, the message is gone but the cropping remains. Follow this procedure to see a failure:
  1. Open a new default text document
  2. type a few lines of anything
  3. Format > Page...
  4. Set top margin to 0.25 (no message about bad margins; this is a change from before patch 1)
  5. Click print preview: looks great!
  6. File > Print and click Mac OS Preview button
  7. Observe that the top lines of text have been cropped!

Note you can use File > Printer Settings and select "Any Printer," the symptom is the same, hence this is not unique to my Epson.

If you use File > Export as PDF, and view the exported PDF, again it looks fine with the 0.25" top margin and all text in place -- as with preview. But going through the print process causes cropping.

This is a known bug in Apple's Java printing support. Java well crop a minimum margin of roughly 0.25" even when the printer allows narrower margins.

Hmph. Well, fortunately, the workaround is to Export to PDF and print the PDF. Just a bit tedious.
