I also wonder if it is possible to automatically send the NeoOffice updates list mails into the RSS feed as well. Just so that people can stick to one level of info:
* updates (by mailing list)
* updates + headlines
* forum (I presume this includes any headlines, and there is almost always an FYI message about a new patch there)
Copying my release and patch announcements into a Trinity forum is fairly trivial so Ed is looking at the current RSS feed code to make sure that we post these announcements correctly so that they actually make it to the RSS feed.
Also, adding a link on the main page to the RSS feeds page on Trinity should be easy to do. RSS doesn't really need translation as it is a technical acronym and it is small so I can squeeze it into the header section of the main page.
If the problem is that too few people ever visit trinity to see the Headlines feed here, it should be relatively trivial to add the feed url to the <head> of all the neooffice.org pages.... I don't really see people downloading and never visiting trinity, but....
This is a very good point. I suspect that some users might be are turned off by the fact that there is so much text on our main pages. However, all of that text was added because they solved a sizable support problem.
Most recently, when there has been a surge in the number of donors that reply to our thank you e-mail with the same download or web page navigation issue, we have quickly modified the main page to get the information that is causing the surge in support e-mails.
We do this until we find some content change that stops the surge before it buries us. Granted this is very reactive, but it has definitely helped us keep our support load at a workable level so that can focus most of our time on development and bug fixing.

I like your way better. Fortunately, I have a single PHP include that gets included into the <title> section of all pages so I added your RSS feed link there and it is now active on the main site.

Along the lines of incremental improvement to the site, last night I was working on the RSS feed system. Our RSS feeds are driven off of trinity and didn't have enough functionality to really do what I wanted.
I set up a fixed announcement topic for patches and releases right at the top of the support forum where we can copy in similar content to the mailing list, so that way people don't necessarily need to go through e-mail. Additionally, I enhanced trinity's RSS system to allow for filtering on individual topics, which allows us to provide an RSS feed of patch and release announcements directly driven by our posts to that forum topic.
I also moved the "RSS Feeds" block higher on trinity which, with the changes to the meta info on the main site, should make it a bit more aware to users that RSS is an available option. Back when I first did RSS support here in the pre-Tiger days of yore, I thought it was a novelty...guess it's somehow catching on
