Unfortunately, after we released NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 4 a few days ago, a few of our users found that the updated HSQLDB code that closed a security hole in NeoOffice Base did not run on Mac OS X 10.3.9 Panther. Fortunately, Panther support was easily restored by recompiling HSQLDB with a version of Java that is common to all versions of Mac OS X so we have released NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 5.

In addition, we have expanded our Asian text input and layout enhancements to include Chinese, Japanese, and Korean punctuation. The previous patch only included support for spaces.

Patch 5 can be downloaded from the following URL:

Earlier this week we released NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 5 with some Asian text input and layout changes that were intended to better handle input and layout of full-width Chinese, Japanese, and Korean spaces, punctuation, and numbers.

While these changes were implemented to work around some Apple Java input method bugs, the initial feedback we have seen is that roughly half like the new Asian text features but half find the features to be difficult to work with.

Since we have found that the new Asian text features can cause difficulty for some users, we decided that the safest course of action was to remove the new Asian text features and release NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 6.

Patch 6 can be downloaded from the following URL:

Since our last patch was released, we have been continued to fix any severe bugs that have been reported by our users. In addition to several small bug fixes, we have fixed the following three issues that have affected a large number of NeoOffice users for quite some time and we have released these fixes in NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 7:

- Incorrect line spacing
- Misrendering of font ligatures when font style changes in the middle of a ligature
- Incorrect printer settings when printing with some printers

Warning: the first two fixes may affect layout of your documents so if positioning of text or images in your document is critical, we highly recommend reading the following NeoWiki article before you install the patch:

http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/Line_Spacing_and_Ligature_Changes

Patch 7 can be downloaded from the following URL:

2846 - Some print dialog settings not respected when printing
2847 - Incorrect pagination
2848 - Crashes when importing PNG file
2854 - Crashes on startup
2865 - Crashes when adding hyperlink on Leopard

Two days ago we released NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 7 with some fixes for
several printing bugs. Unfortunately, while that patch did fix the
intended printing bugs, our bug fixes caused two very old Java printing
bugs to reappear. Since Patch 7 has only been out a very short time and
the printing bugs that reappeared are very annoying to those that print
frequently, we have restored our fixes for the following bugs that
reappeared and have released Patch 8:

- Printing will always print only 1 uncollated copy
- Printing will always go to the default printer

Patch 8 can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/patch.php

Below is a list of the bugs that we fixed in NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 8:

2873 - Cannot print more than one copy
2874 - Path for "My Documents" cannot be set in preferences
2876 - Cannot print to non-default printer

Unfortunately, one of our volunteer testers found a bug in Patch 9 shortly after it was released. The bug - which causes a Calc window to be hidden after inserting a new chart - occurs due to a typographical error. As a result of this typo, we did not correctly disable one of the new features that is in development for NeoOffice 2.2.3.

Although this bug would only affect a small percentage of NeoOffice users, Patch 9 has only been out for a few hours so we have correctly disabled the development code and released Patch 10.

Patch 10 can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/patch.php

If you are helping test the NeoOffice 2.2.3 new features, you do not need to install Patch 10 but we do recommend that you download the latest Patch 10 test patch from the testing forum topics listed in the following NeoWiki article:

We really do not like to inconvenience our users by releasing a new patch so soon after our last patch, but after we released Patch 10 we noticed a sudden increase in the number of users experiencing crashes due to system hacks on their machine. We really hate crashing bugs no matter the cause and since it appears that the number of machines with system hacks is increasing, we have released Patch 11 as it contains a change that protects NeoOffice from crashing on machines that have certain system hacks installed.

Patch 11 can be downloaded from the following URL:

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/patch.php

For those that are curious, we found that the system hacks causing these recent crashes do some GUI initialization steps earlier than NeoOffice's code does and these system hacks do such initialization steps on the wrong thread. Using the wrong thread causes certain Mac OS X functions to behave very differently than expected and this causes large multi-threaded applications like NeoOffice to eventually crash. Fortunately, we were able to protect NeoOffice from these system hacks by moving our GUI initialization code earlier in the startup process before the system hacks invoke their own code.

Also, we are still on track to release NeoOffice 2.2.3 in the first half
of March 2008 so if you want to help test the new QuickTime video support
and other new features for the NeoOffice 2.2.3 release, please visit the
following NeoWiki article for links to the most current test patch and
discussion forum topics:

http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/NeoOffice_2.2.3_New_Features

Below is a list of the bugs that we fixed in NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 11:

2907 - Splashscreen appears on wrong screen when secondary screen
is to the left of the primary screen
2908 - Can only print to default printer on Mac OS X 10.4.x and higher
2912 - NeoOffice crashes at start with SaftLoader and 1PasswdIM
system hacks

If you have any support questions, please visit the NeoWiki
or post a question in the NeoOffice Support forum:

community, it may still have some undiscovered bugs that may cause
NeoOffice to crash. If you feel that you need software that has been
heavily tested, we recommend that you use a commercially-supported
product like Microsoft Office or Apple iWork.
