SANTA CLARA, CA - 19 April 2011 - NeoOffice.org is pleased to announce the release of NeoOffice 3.2. NeoOffice 3.2 can be downloaded by all NeoOffice donors who have donatedUS$10 (or €7 or £6 or CA$10 or AU$10 or ¥834) or more within the last year from the NeoOffice download page.
For those who want to download a free version of NeoOffice, no donation is required to download our older NeoOffice 3.1.2 version.
The NeoOffice project is funded entirely by donations from our users. The cost and time spent on NeoOffice is very large for Patrick Luby and Ed Peterlin - the Mac software engineers that have created all of the improvements in NeoOffice that are not in OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice. While many free software products such as OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice are funded by huge donations from large corporations such as Oracle and Novell, NeoOffice has no corporate sponsors. Without any corporate sponsors, Patrick and Ed must rely exclusively on donations from our users to continue implementing the latest Mac OS X features in NeoOffice.
If you have any support questions, a list of suggested steps for finding an answer for a problem as fast as possible is available on the NeoOffice Support page. Since most of our donations come from a small percentage of our users, we provide priority support to our most generous donors in our NeoOffice forums.
Special thanks also go to the following organizations and people:
All NeoOffice donors. The NeoOffice project is funded entirely by the time and money donated by our users. Without the generous donations and volunteer hours made by our users, NeoOffice would not exist.
All of the NeoOffice mirror sites. By mirroring NeoOffice, these sites allow us to provide free downloads of an older NeoOffice version by absorbing a large portion of the substantial bandwidth costs associated with the millions of downloads made by NeoOffice users each year.
Like NeoOffice.org, these organizations and people are dedicated to providing open source software as a public service to people throughout the world at minimal cost. Their generosity helps make applications like NeoOffice possible.
About NeoOffice.org
Since 2003, NeoOffice has been the leading open source office software created and supported by Mac software engineers specifically for Mac OS X and is used by over half a million people worldwide. NeoOffice.org is funded NeoOffice entirely by the time and money donated by our users. For more information, visit http://www.neooffice.org/.

Since we began limiting our download services of our latest NeoOffice release to only current and past donors, we have seen a disturbing trend start to emerge in the following software review sites:
In the above review sites, several posters accuse us of "illegal" and "fraudulent" activity. Their assertion is that the GNU General Public License (GPL), requires us to provide free downloads of NeoOffice binaries.
We take all such accusations of illegal or license non-compliance seriously. Our review of the GPL indicates that their assertion that we must provide downloads of free binaries to all internet users is flat out wrong for the following reasons:
1. The GPL only puts requirements on source code, not pre-built binaries - The foundation of the GPL is to ensure that anyone can access, modify, and redistribute source code. To ensure compliance with the GPL's source code requirements, we have always provided detailed instructions for accessing and compiling NeoOffice's source code here. Anyone is free to compile their own custom build.
2. Selling download services for pre-built binaries is not a violation of the GPL - Apparently this misunderstanding of the GPL is so common GNU - the organization that wrote the GPL - clearly states that there is no such requirement in the GPL on the following FAQ:
Quote:
I just found out that a company has a copy of a GPL'ed program, and it costs money to get it. Aren't they violating the GPL by not making it available on the Internet?
No. The GPL does not require anyone to use the Internet for distribution. It also does not require anyone in particular to redistribute the program....
3. This is a source code licensing issue, not a legal issue - Oracle owns the copyright to all of the OpenOffice.org code that NeoOffice uses so this is a copyright licensing issue between us and Oracle. Oracle releases the OpenOffice.org code under the GNU Limited General Public License and it is the LGPL that is what give both us and LibreOffice permission to copy, modify, and redistribute the OpenOffice.org source code. The only difference is that we have released all of our additions and modifications to the OpenOffice.org code under the GPL. We believe that the LGPL that Oracle and LibreOffice use is too "proprietary friendly" so we have always used licenses the NeoOffice source code under the GPL under as allowed by section 2.b of the LGPL.
We won't try to guess what motivations these posters have for making such blatantly false accusations, but they clearly have threatened to litigate. Should any litigation come about, we will aggressively defend our GPL compliance.
We will also aggressively defend anyone's right to take our GPL source code and make a better product. To be honest, funding and running NeoOffice is no easy task for Ed Peterlin and I. We both started NeoOffice because we value choice and, even now, office suite options for Mac users is limited. So if someone else can produce a better product using our code as a starting code and releases their code under the GPL like we have, then everyone wins.

After we released NeoOffice 3.2 last week, one of our donors reported a crash when clicking on the Mac OS X menubar or pressing certain Help buttons. Although this crashing bug appears to only occur on a small percentage of Mac machines - it does not occur on machines that have all of Apple's system updates installed - we have been busily working on finding the cause and fixing this bug.
We are pleased to report that we found the cause and have fixed this bug. To ensure that NeoOffice users have the most stable code available, we have released the fix for this crashing bug in NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 1. No new patch was released for NeoOffice 3.1.2 since it uses older, obsolete Apple functions that do not trigger this crashing bug.
For those who are interested, we found that this bug was caused by Apple's Java releasing native menus in the Mac OS X menubar after NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code updated on or more menus in the menubar. While this crashing bug is not known to occur if the latest Apple Java system updates have been installed on your Mac, we fixed this bug to ensure compatibility with all recent versions of Apple's Java by limiting when the NeoOffice can safely update native menus in the menubar.

After we released NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 1 two weeks ago, Apple released a new developer preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. We did some testing of NeoOffice on this latest Lion developer preview release and found a bug in the native Open and Save dialogs. The bug that we found causes the file list in both dialogs to flicker and makes it difficult to read the file list.
To ensure that NeoOffice 3.2 works smoothly on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion whenever it is released by Apple, we have fixed this bug and have released NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 2. This bug also occurs in NeoOffice 3.1.2 so we have released NeoOffice 3.1.2 Patch 9 with the same fix.

After we released the last NeoOffice 3.2 patch last month, we have been busily testing NeoOffice on the latest developer previews of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. As a side effect of that testing, we recently found a way to fix a window resizing bug in Apple's Java that has annoyed NeoOffice users for many years and we have included the fix for this bug in NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 3.
This bug in Apple's Java causes a window's entire background to be painted white when you resize a window. With our fix, Java no longer paints the entire window white so that the content in your document now remains visible when you resize any NeoOffice windows.
In addition to the window resizing bug, below is a list of bugs that we have fixed in NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 3:
3660 - Index page style creates separate print job
3661 - Quick Look plugin ignores template files

After we released NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 3 last week, Apple released a new developer preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. We did some testing of NeoOffice on this latest Lion developer preview release and found that Apple has made a change in the native Save dialog. This change causes a "/" character to be silently appended onto the end of the file name that you set in the Save dialog.
To ensure that NeoOffice 3.2 works smoothly on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion whenever it is released by Apple (and to protect against the possiblity that Apple may make this change in the next Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard system update), we have added code to prevent this unwanted "/" character from being appended in the native Save dialog and we have released this code in NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 4.
NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 4 can be downloaded from the NeoOffice 3.2 patch download page. Note: this Lion change does not affect NeoOffice 3.1.2 so no new patch is needed for NeoOffice 3.1.2 users.

Posted: Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:37 am Post subject: NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 5 released
After installing the latest Mac OS X 10.7 developer preview release that Apple released earlier this month, we found a bug in the Mac OS X 10.7 scrollbars. This bug only occurs when you have a very long document open and the scrollbar "thumb" is very short but in such cases, Mac OS X will return incorrect bounds information when NeoOffice queries the position and size of the scrollbar thumb. As a result of this incorrect bounds information, mouse events in the scrollbar will behave as if the scrollbar thumb is in a different position than the position that appears on screen.
To ensure that NeoOffice 3.2 works smoothly on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion whenever it is released by Apple, we have modified the NeoOffice code to avoid this Apple bug and we have released this modified code in NeoOffice 3.2 Patch 5.

Also, in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 3 we added a new NeoOffice Mobile login screen. Although the new login screen is not that much different than the old one, the new login screen allows NeoOffice Mobile users to save their username and password in your Mac OS X user keychain by checking the "Save password" checkbox that has been added to the new login screen.

After we released the last NeoOffice 3.2.1 patch last month, we have fixed the following critical bugs reported by our donors and have included the fixes for these bugs in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4:
- Opening certain .docx files causes comments to be merged and repeated
- Dragging table column name from data source fails
- A failed login shows a blank page in the NeoOffice Mobile window
- Pressing the window zoom button causes incorrect resizing in NeoOffice Mobile login screen
Also, in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4 we simplified the process for downloading and installing future patches and new versions of NeoOffice. Several donors felt that the NeoOffice update process required too many steps so we have made the following changes to reduce the number of steps that users will need to do when NeoOffice's automatic update checking indicates that a patch or new version of NeoOffice is available:
- Starting with NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 4, NeoOffice will download the update from within NeoOffice. If downloading of the update fails or gets interrupted, NeoOffice will automatically try to resume the download from where the download failed.
- After the download completes, NeoOffice will automatically open the downloaded file and ask the user if they want to install the update now or install it later. If the user chooses to install the update now, NeoOffice will quit normally and launch the installer in the downloaded file. If the user chooses to install the update later, the user will be asked if they want to install the update when they quit NeoOffice.

Posted: Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:36 am Post subject: NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 6 released
Last week, one of our users found that NeoOffice's temporary files were being deleted while NeoOffice is running. While we have not been able to determine what application or tool is deleting NeoOffice's temporary files, we do know that if NeoOffice's temporary files are deleted while any documents are open, that can cause images and embedded objects to become corrupted when those documents are saved.
To protect NeoOffice from any applications or tools that might be deleting NeoOffice's temporary files, we have changed the NeoOffice code to create all temporary files in the user's "Library/Application Support/NeoOffice" folder and we have included this change in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 6.
Additionally, we have also included fixes for the following critical bugs in NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 6:
- NeoOffice crashes when selecting certain options in the popup menu that is displayed when text is input in the native open file dialog's Spotlight field
- NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code will sometimes hang when quitting on certain machines
NeoOffice 3.2.1 Patch 6 can be downloaded from the NeoOffice 3.2.1 patch download page by users that have paid US$10 (or €7 or £6 or CA$10 or AU$10 or ¥834) or more within the last year.
