Success! After upgrading to 10.4.11, I could easily reproduce this bug by doing the following:
1. Launch NeoOffice and click on another app while it is launching
2. Command-tab into NeoOffice and mouse the pointer over the menubar
3. Tap the trackpad
I think that I have fixed this bug and I have posted a test patch at the end of bug 2731. Does the test patch fix the bug?

Hi.
I tried Richard's trick, i.e: clicking on a menu title with the trackpad button, then, clicking with the same button on the open document. The menu closes, and then Tadam! tapping with the trackpad now functions properly, all the time, even in a newly opened document, or if I switch to another application then back to NO. The trackpad taps contunue to behave correctly even in a mewly created ( empty) document.
