I like to keep the chapters of my books apart from each other.
Have had bad experiences with typing a single hundred-page
document. I don't like bad errors I make to effect the whole
product, but rather, at a maximum to only screw up a single
chapter. So, long story short, I like to type each chapter of
a book as a separate file.

In Appleworks, each word document has an option to
"Start From Page Number __." Here, you put in any number
that would be the next page in your book from the previous
document. So, for instance, my last chapter ended at page
63. So, in Appleworks I can just fill in the blank with the
number 64, and the document will start numbering itself
from page 64, even though "page 64" is really only page
one of this new document.

So, my question is, where is this very obvious function on
NeoOffice? I must be missing it. Went to many forums and
saw how one could conceal page number 1, say, for like a
cover page, or conceal page 2, for the contents, and so on.
And then that document would start displaying it's numbers
on page 3, for example. (And the way to do that, by the
way is really needlessly counterintuitive and weird.) Anyhow,
I must be not seeing it somehow. Clearly lots of writers like
to divide their books into several different documents for
convenience. Where is the "Start This Document At Page
Number ___?" I have a screen capture of this feature in
Appleworks. but don't know how to paste it in here.

Where can I find this control on NeoOffice? Obviously, they
would not go to the trouble to build this giant, wonderful
program and skip that, so I guess I just need to be guided
to it. Thanks for your help.

Here is my post from your other thread

All this is wrong. Clearly I don't understand 'Offset' My original post is as follows
Quote:
What you want to do ought to be possible by following these instructions from NeoWiki. Setting an offset of, say, 76, should make 76 your start page number. However I find that if I set an offset the field is still visible but apparently empty Sad

Here is the correct info
Instructions to start a document at a Page Number higher than 1 are available on the OOo Wiki (scroll down the page) - I've tried them and they work. The same question is covered on p. 122 of the NeoOffice User Guide downloadable from here

Bug #1211 (NeoOffice) seems to me to be based on the same misunderstanding I had about the way 'offset' works. Maybe the comment should be edited - I'm not sure. As I say, I don't really understand 'offset'.

And here's the relevant info from my post from your other thread (which has now been locked to avoid any more duplications):

-In addition to the link James3359 gave you, you may want to take a look at the NeoWiki article on page numbers.

Hi Lorinda,

The NeoWiki article on page numbers was where I started when I first posted on this. ISTM that it gives the impression that the instructions under How to Set a Page other than the First page as Page Number 1 would enable one to do what melvinbrand is asking. But actually they don't. What is needed is instruction about How to set the First Page to a Page Number other than 1 which is covered in the OOo Wiki.

I don't know what the policy is about such things, but would it be helpful either to reproduce the OOo Wiki info on NeoWiki or to have a direct link to the relevant page from NeoWiki?

In theory I could do this edit myself as I am registered, but I am very much a newbie and don't want to tread on anyone's toes.

Thanks for the clarification, James. I haven't really read the wiki article since I translated it a while ago, and I missed the distinction.

Having checked the licensing info on the OOo wiki page, it looks like the relevant sections could be copied, as long as it the source is clearly marked and a link to the Creative Commons license is included.

Other options include:
-a link to that wiki page (potentially a good idea in any case). I usually add a section titled "Related External Links" for this purpose.
-for somone to write instructions in their own words.

If you want to take care of it, I'd say go for it. We're always happy to have more wiki elves. There is a helpful wiki page detailing editorial guidelines and templates to use. Maybe you've found it already.
