PostPosted: Thu Jan 24, 2008 7:31 pm    Post subject: restart line numbering for groups of paragraphs?

Hi there,

newbie here. I'm trying to line number a bunch of paragraphs in a very long (100+ page) document. The paragraphs I want numbered are scattered throughout the document (with their own style), usually clustered in groups of more than 1 paragraph. I want the line numbering to restart at each separate group of paragraphs, NOT at each paragraph. I can line number the style from start to finish, or restart at each paragraph, but that's not what I want.

I can do this in Word by adding section breaks to define the start and end of the paragraphs to be numbered.

What's the secret handshake with NO?

Running NO 2.2.2 patch8 on OSX 10.5.1.

1-You have to number the lines of the document.
Go to Tools > Line numbering…
Check "Show numbering" and choose "Interval = 1 line".
Click OK.

2-Click at the beginning of the first group of pragraphs you want to number the lines.
Go to Format > Paragraph…
In the window that appears, click on the "Numbering" tab.
In the "Line numbering" section, check "Include this paragraph in the line numbering" and "Restart at this paragraph"
Set "Start with" to 1.
Click OK.

Then apply the same method to the second group of paragraphs, etc.
If you want to exclude a paragraph, uncheck the "Include this paragraph in the numbering" box in the "Line numbering" section.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

thanks for the reply, but it doesn't do quite what I want. If I do as you say, line numbering restarts at each paragraph in the group I select.

what happens                    what I want

1 paragraph A                    1 paragraph A
2 paragraph A                    2 paragraph A
3 paragraph A                    3 paragraph A

   unnumbered paragraphs    unnumbered paragraphs

1 paragraph B                    1 paragraph B
2 paragraph B                    2 paragraph B
3 paragraph B                    3 paragraph B

1 paragraph C                    4 paragraph C
2 paragraph C                    5 paragraph C
3 paragraph C                    6 paragraph C

It's normal, because you have selected the group of paragraphs. Also, the format you choose applies to each selected paragraph independently.

Frist, number all the lines.

Then click at the beginning of the first group of paragraphs, and apply the method described in my previous post, without selecting anything.

Then go to the beginning of the second group of paragraphs and apply the same method.

Now, you have the first group of paragraphs numbered from 1 to x, the second one from 1 to y, and all the rest of the document from 1 to …

Hope it's clear. It works for me .

I've added a page in NeoWiki with a screenshot.

My English has not yet been "polished" Crying or Very sad , but I hope you'll understand. There is a French version, if you like Smile

I read through it twice; it doesn't look like it needs any polishing. Very Happy

I'll try to remember to read through it again another time, since you caught things I missed on your last English page!

Not surprising, Smokey had polished it. Thus, it was no more "my English". Wink

Very little to polish, as usual Smile
