|
The second major new feature - Mac OS X Leopard native grammar checking - announced in our plans for 2008 is now available for testing.
In addition, I have finally succeeded in implementing a much requested feature: Command-clicking on a document window's title bar displays the path of the document.
To use the Mac OS X Leopard native grammar checking, you will first need to be running Mac OS X 10.5.x on your machine as Apple does not provide native grammar checking in earlier versions of Mac OS X.
You can access the grammar checking feature by selecting either of the submenus in the new Tools :: Add-ons :: Check Grammar menu.
You can test these new features by installing the following test patch:
PowerPC:
http://jane.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-2.2.2-Patch-10-Test-2-PowerPC.dmg
Intel:

The grammar check doesn't seem very efficient (in either NeoOffice or TextEdit). Is there something we need to know about it? |

My guess is that Apple will continue to work on improving their grammar checking feature. This is a very new feature for them so we should see improvement over time.
On the other hand, grammar checking requires a lot more string matching steps than spellchecking requires so I really would never expect grammar checking to match the speed of spellchecking.

It's not really speed, but the fact that it misses things like:
The English is very the best.
or
One person may not altering Alfred.
which don't seem grammatically correct to me? |

Yup. That is also my experience that Apple's grammar checking is not the smartest or most complete.
Also, note that Apple only has support for English grammar checking at this point in time so if your document has a different character locale setting, you won't get any errors.

Seems to be working well with sentences that came up in Mail and Textedit.
I'm going to assume that implementing green squiggle lines under the text is out of the question at this time. |

I made sure it was set to English (USA) in NeoOffice, and that spell & grammar check was set to English in TextEdit.
Nothing great so far. I guess you're right though: it's going to be improved over time (hopefully before the release of Leopard's successor )… |

Given that so many people use the Internet to communicate without English being their first language, I think an English grammar checker is the one that is most badly needed .
Best wishes,

I agree. But I guess that for polishing my En translations in NeoWiki, Lorinda and Smokey are better "grammar checkers" than Mac OS X

True, but we cannot package a Lorinda and a Smokey with every copy of NeoOffice...

Why? Do you think they don't agree?

No, we only have one of each...
And I, for one, prefer to keep them here instead of shipping them out to users.
Good night,

I don't fit well in a box (or a packet).
