Is there a list of 'known issues' anywhere so I can work out if my problem is my problem or a problem shared?

Specifically, an image in a text document which was saved as Word 97/2000/XP .doc disappeared when the document was emailed and opened in NeoOffice at the other end. The image was still in the 'original' document and appeared correctly when emailed after being re-saved as an Open Office Text .odt file.

I know saving as different file formats may cause problems, but I assumed they would be formatting issues. Obviously I'd like to be aware of any known problems when exchanging files with Microsoft only, as well as other NeoOffice, users.

Many thanks!

The first thing to look at is whether or not the user that you sent the document to is using the latest NeoOffice version and patch.

If both of you are using NeoOffice 2.2.2 with Patch 11, then try the following:

1. Quit NeoOffice
2. Open the .doc file that you sent to the other user

Does the image appear? If so, then the problem may be that the image is "linked" instead of "embedded". To verify that your image is embedded, click on the image, then Control-click on the image and in the popup menu that appears, select Picture. In the dialog that appears, select the Picture tab and look at File Name field in the Link section. If it contains "[None]", then your image is embedded. However, if there something different in that field, then you have linked the image and linked images won't be saved into the document.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, I installed and patched NeoOffice on the receiving Mac, both machines are NeoOffice 2.2.2 Patch 11.

I've opened the .doc file (the 'original' on my Mac) and see the image as expected. Following your instructions I see it is embedded.

So that should be okay? The file should have opened correctly on the receiving Mac? There are no known issues that could have caused this?

I think I shall create a new document and email it again as a test.

Thanks!

There is no known issue, but that may only mean that you are the first person to find the issue.

How exciting! Shocked

While we wait to hear back I have opened the document using MS Word and it appears correct. I have emailed it to another user who only has Word on their Mac and the picture is missing. I have also transferred the file over our local network to that user and the picture is still missing. So it's not just an email issue?

I've re-saved the document "Word 6.0" format. That does email correctly to my Word friend, they can now see the image.

So Word 97/2000/XP format files lose embedded images as they transfer over networks?

That would be unusual that an e-mail application would chop bits out of an attachment so you might want to check out the following URL. Specifically, read the last three or four comments at the bottom:

http://www.nabble.com/export-to-Wort-DOC-format-and-images-t4629141.html

Per this URL, I believe that this is caused by viewing the document in Word's "Normal" view. If you change to Word's Web or Print view and the images are visible, then you are seeing the normal "image hiding" feature of Word's Normal view.

Yes! I've viewed the emailed document using Word and the image does indeed appear when 'View' is set to 'Page Layout'.

Good, but does that help us understand why my original correspondent was unable to see the image when opening the file using NeoOffice? I can't make the image disappear in NeoOffice in the same way I can using Word. Is there an equivalent 'View' setting?

Thanks again.

It only tells us that the .doc file that the other user is getting is not corrupted. At this point, it would be very helpful to see the file ourselves and see if we can reproduce the bug. Is the document sensitive?

No problem letting you see the document. Let me know how.

Thanks

You can file a bug in our Bugzilla for that (and attach the file to the bug).

Note that you will have to register for Bugzilla, as registration there is separate from Trinity.

I'm having trouble recreating this issue so I won't open a bug until I can be sure I can.

As soon as I have access again to the Mac I first saw this happen on I will confirm it.

Thanks!
