PostPosted: Wed Feb 27, 2008 1:38 pm    Post subject: protect document/sheet does not work

I have created a NeoOffice spreadsheet and I can use the Protect Document feature under the Tools menu. It asks me to enter a password and confirm it. I do so. Now my document is protected just as I would expect, i.e. I cannot change any cells.

Here is the problem: I go back to the Tools/Protect Document/Sheet menu item and Sheet IS checked. I select it so I can uncheck it and indeed it unchecks the word 'Sheet' but it does NOT ask me to enter a password. It simply UNprotects the sheet. No password required.

I have Saved the document under a different name and get the same results. I have saved it as a.ods file and a .xls file and still the same result.

One interesting note: It did not always do this. It did not do this yesterday but it is doing it today. I have not made any changes to anything other than the spreadsheet I am working on. I have even created another very small and simple spreadsheet and the problem persists.

Anyone else experiencing this?

First of all, you should install the latest patch, i.e. Patch 11.
You get it from this page
Each patch contains all the bug fixes of the previous patches, so it's not necessary to install patches 1 to 10 before installing patch11.

Afterwards you might have a look at
this page in NeoWiki and see if your problem is solved.

Thanks, I will attempt to download the patch 11. I am on dialup so it can be problematic sometimes to download a file so large.

The NeoWiki page basically confirms what the Help file in NeoOffice says, that Sheet Protection is supposed to work differently than it is working for me which I already knew. It is supposed to require me to enter a password to UNprotect a Sheet but again, it does not do that. It does not even ask for a password, rather it just unprotects the sheet.

I hope you manage to install patch #11. I'm running 2.2.2 with that patch, I've just tested it and the password thing works for me the way Help says it should.

I know that's can be very unpleasant. I has been on dialup for a long time, now I appreciate my ADSL connection, even if it's not the fastest possible Smile
If you have problems for downloading, try "curl" following the steps described in NeoWiki. That can help a lot.

Well I was finally able to get a complete, error free download of patch 11 but alas it did not solve the problem. I don't know for sure what to do next but I have always managed to solve things eventually by just sticking to it.

Thanks for the help though as you have at least told me that it does work. Must be something particular to my setup. Although, like I mentioned earlier, it did work correctly for me at first.

I have finally figured out what the problem was.

I had been saving the file as a "Microsoft Excell 97/2000/XP .xls" file. If I save it as a .ods file then Protection works.

This also is true of certain other things that can be altered in a spreadsheet such as shadows on cell borders.
