My understanding of the little explanation text in the OOo extensions directory was that the extension creates a new menu item (Insert > Page number…) which opens a dialog that lets you to easily add a page number to a document:

There are instructions to configuring menus with Pagination in the NeoOffice User Guide, chapter 8 page 410.

To download the User Guide, just click on the link on the left side of this page, under Download NeoOffice.

Not in my menu, it doesn't - there's no Insert::Page anything. I've tried a few extensions and they don't seem to automatically plumb themselves in, they need some help being accessible in NeoOffice.

After installing a extension, you need to create a new document window to see any new menus added by the newly installed extension as the OpenOffice.org will not refresh the menus in the current document.

It works for me in OOo/X11 2.3.0. I get a new "Page number…" menu item in the Insert menu, between "Footer" and "Footnote…".

Don't forget you will need to relaunch OOo/NeoOffice before any new menu items show up.

Edit: Or create a new document window, as pointed out by Patrick above…

Got this from Charles.

Hi!

I cannot test with NeoOffice, because I don't have computer running
Mac OS. On your screenshot, I noticed that the extension was installed
as "Pagination.oxt Folder.zip". It means that the extension of the
file you installed is .zip instead of .oxt . Try reinstalling it using
a filename ending with .oxt instead of .zip . BTW, a .xot file is a
.zip file, it's just the filename that is different. Maybe this is why
it doesn't work.

The difference between My extensions and NeoOffice extensions is that
'My extensions' are installed into the user folder, and that NeoOffice
extensions are installed into the NoeOffice folder. My extensions are
accessible only to the user (local), and NoeOffice extensions are
accessible to all users onto the computer (global). To install global
extensions, you need to use unopkg program, using administrator
privileges. Ask on NoeOffice forums if you need help for that.

Charles Brunet.

still cannot get it to work or to save as .oxt. said screw it and chucked it in the trash. Oh well.

I figured out how to get this to work. The issue is that even after changing the description.xml file to only running on OpenOffice.org 2.2 or higher, the Page Number menu will not ever be displayed. This is due to the extension's use of a feature that is only available on OpenOffice.org 2.3 or higher.

Despite this missing menu, you can still run the installed extension by selecting the Tools :: Macros :: Run Macro menu. In the dialog that appears, expand My Macros :: Pagination and select Pagination. Select Main in the right-hand pane and click the Run button.

Edit: please be aware that we are now essentially hacking the author's extension so please be kind and don't complain to the author if you are having problems with these workarounds.

He said to try to rename the zipped .oxt file to .oxt and I tried and no luck still recognizes the zip file extension. I may have been very close to getting this to work; but too much wasted time. I give up!

Thank you for your help though. And to those that got it to work. Great!

Figured it would be a nice feature to have but not worth the time and aggravation.

I will live without it.

You have likely messed up the zipping of the file. You must only edit the description.xml and after rezipping, the .oxt file must have the same directory structure within the zipped file.

From the command line, this is a pretty straightforward. Here are the commands I used:

Code:
rm -Rf ~/mytmpoxtdir
mkdir ~/mytmpoxtdir
cd ~/mytmpoxtdir
unzip /absolute/path/to/the/downloaded/.oxt/file
sed 's#"2\.3"#"2.2"#g' description.xml > description.xml.tmp
mv description.xml.tmp description.xml
zip -r /absolute/path/to/the/downloaded/.oxt/file *

Launch NeoOffice, uninstall any previously installed versions of the Pagination extension and install the .oxt file.

Once installed, you can assign it to a keyboard shortcut as I described above to save having to use the Run Macro dialogue all the time.

Basically, clicking on the new menu option in 2.3 or above just does the same thing as evoking Main from within the Pagination BASIC package anyway.

YES!!!!!!!!!!! I finally got it running. Thank you Patrick. I tried it one last time and got it - I also opened it as you suggest! Thank you so very much!

p.s. my zip method worked!

added: I am not a wiki dude and never posted to one; but maybe someone can add this extension and the method to get it working on there for others.

ALSO: Thank you to Charles Brunet the creator of the extension for his many emails to me and Patrick and Tanya to get things sorted out so Patrick could get this thing working. very greatly Appreciated!!!

I'm glad you got it working!

As one of the "wiki elves," I've added a link to this thread both to our "New Articles Needed" page and to the "Related Links" section of the "How to Add Page Numbers" page.

I'm afraid I don't understand the process well enough myself to write the article, but at least the links are there. If someone wants to write it up without bothering to do the wiki mark-up, I'll happily "translate" it into "wiki code."
