PostPosted: Wed May 14, 2008 7:55 am    Post subject: Euro currency not displaying correctly

I've just created my first spreadsheet in euro. In Italy, a number is written:
1.234,00. I can't speak for the rest of the continent.

Note the difference in use of . and ,

When I tried to change it so the Italians who will be reading it would understand the sums involved, the numbers displayed as 1,234.00 Oops!
Shocked

Also, the euro options are miles down the list. I nearly gave up hope of ever finding them. Even if entered alphabetically they should come before the Thai whatever. As so many countries now use the euro, could they be put near the top - dollars, pounds sterling, euro - something like that?

Thanks

I don't see that. When I have Italian date and number formats set in the System Preferences application, when I launch NeoOffice Calc, select the Format :: Cells menu, click on the Numbers tab, and select Currency, the currency is set to Euros.

This is how NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code works: it tries to match the currency to your system's locale so that you do not have to look through the massive list of currencies. So if you use Italian formatting frequently, can you verify that you have Italian date and number formats set in the System Preference application?

To do this, open the System Preferences application, click on the International icon, and click on the Formats tab. Check the Show All Regions checkbox and select Italy :: Italian for the Region. After doing this, relaunch NeoOffice.

OK - I can do that. But what a bind. I work in English most of the time and only flip to the Italian Pro keyboard and Italian spellcheck when I am using Italian. This means resetting everything every time I need to use Italian. And, more importantly, remembering to set it back. But, if that's how it works, I'll just have to discipline myself.

Thanks

I found another way, and I think I may be happier with it set this way.

System prefs are set to:

Region UK (that gets my dates the way I want)
Currency Sterling

Office language prefs are:

Interface English (So I can understand all the instructions)
Locale Italian (gets my decimal separator as a , and my currency as Euro)
Default language English (my docs should start out in English and so should the spell check)

Of course, I have to change the spellcheck language when I start a doc or sheet in Italian, but that's easy to do when I change the keyboard. And I still have to remember to change the locale back to USA or UK if I'm using numbers where it matters what the decimal separator is. But at least it's just Neo that's affected, not the whole system.

At least I'l try it this way for a while and see how it works.

Thanks

I *think* that you can set up templates with the various defaults, so you could set up a template for Italian documents and another for English ones, and open one or the other depending on the document you want to create.

Sardisson,

You are a genius!!! 10 out of 10!! Very Happy

That's the answer.

I have created 4 templates :

2 in Writer - English and Italian
2 in Calc - English and Italian

One of the main tricks is to watch the 'This document only' check box. That seems to guarantee that the change in country doesn't spill over onto another template.

So far, they have all tested OK. At least the spell checkers are correct for the language I want in each and the numbers are in the expected format. And new docs do not use the other spell checker. I'm happy with that.

Maybe we should rename this post 'Templates and how to use them' or 'Neo Office in more than one language' ?

Thanks so much.

We should get this in the wiki as one of the examples on the Editing the Default Styles and Using Templates page....

Do you want me to create a full description of the steps to follow? I have editing privileges as I help Lorinda by proof reading her tutorial.

Just don't ask for it tomorrow, please.

I added this to the "New Pages Needed" so that it would be picked up in time, but if you want to work on it, be my guest Smile
