Is there a way to set up a specific group of cells in a spreadsheet to allow the height to adjust to fit the amount of text entered?

Select the cells you want to modify the height.

Go to Format > Row > Optimal Height…

Enter the value you need in the Add field and click OK.

Select the cells you want to 'autosize' and right-click / ctrl-click on one of them and choose Format Cells. On the Alignment tab, check 'Wrap text automatically' and 'Hyphenation active'. This will wrap the text and set the cell height accordingly, but it only works if the text's horizontal alignment is Justified.

Otherwise, you can select the relevant rows, move the mouse pointer over the row headers until it changes to a horizontal line with a double-headed arrow through it, and then double-click - this is the same as doing auto-width on columns.

I hope some of this is useful...

I just tried that on a complicated cell entry. Yes, the hyphenation worked brilliantly. And it works on left alignment as well as justified. But the cell height did not re-adjust automatically not even when the alignment was justified.

Just information, but I would like to know how to do this for the whole sheet.

I have discovered that the default height is related to the font size, but for me, it's too close. It needs a fraction more space around the numbers so I would like to be able to re-set the default row height.

Any ideas, anyone?

Open a new Calc document. Select all. Then go to

Format > Row > Height…

In the dialog that appears, change the height value as you wish. Click OK.

Save your document as template: File > Templates > Save…

Give your template a name and click OK.

Then go to File > Templates > Organize…
Select your new template and click on Commands.
Choose Set as Default Template. Click Close.

Afterwards every time you'll open a new spreadsheet, you'll get the wished height for the rows.
