I a trying to determine if there is a confict with another app which uses Python, and I want to be able to run Open Office with and without it invoking Python.
when does Open Office use Python? are there specific tasks I can do that will or will not invoke a Python process?

I know almost nothing about Python, and even less about the internal workings of the OOo-Python interface.
But the following URL might be helpful (it is a bit technical) to explain the OOo Python interface :

When I was at WWDC in the Open Source BOF one of the people in the audience informed me that the Python binding was not functioning with the GM 1.1.2 OS X build. I haven't personally confirmed that, however...but in any case OOo does have its own internal version of Python (!) and shouldn't be conflicting with any other Python apps. It doesn't do anything to the regular Python installed with OS X and any changes to the Python module path should be isolated to the shells in which OOo runs or is spawned.
