PostPosted: Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:37 pm    Post subject: Trouble installing NeoOffice2.2.5

Hi, I've been using NeoOffice for quite some time on my Power PC G5 and have been through various upgrades OK including up to 2.2.5 sometime last year. I now can't remember exactly which patch I got up to (Patch 6?). Whatever, NeoOffice stopped starting - bouncing ball, NeoOffice start up box then nothing. I've also started getting some trouble waking the Mac after it has gone to sleep.
I tried all the start up fixes I could find but nothing worked. I've checked the Fonts, Java, disk permissions etc
So, in desperation, I completely removed NeoOffice as per the complete remove instructions, including all the /library/preference bits, and tried a new download.
When I try to install, it gets up to about 20% then stops and gives me an error message "Install Failed The source media you are installing from is damaged. try installing from a different copy of the source media or contact the manufacturer for a replacement." I have tried three different downloads, my original from last year, a fresh one on the Mac and another one downloaded via a PC. They all have a file size of 148,030,460 bytes and give the same install error message.
I think that just before XMAS when trying to install, I may have been getting a message something like "codec overun", but not any more.
Any ideas?
Thanks

I may be wrong, but my gut says that your hard disk is corrupted or has some damaged areas. Hard disks contain parts that are always spinning so they do wear out (they are usually the first part that fails on most computers). Installing NeoOffice writes a lot of new files onto your hard disk so if your hard disk has corruption or has damaged areas, you are more likely to notice it.

Just to be on the safe side, I would highly recommend that before you reinstall NeoOffice, try doing a full disk repair. To do a repair of your hard drive, you will need to reboot from your Mac OS X installation disk. The Mac OS X installer will run when you do this but don't be alarmed by this. Just proceed through the installer until you see a regular Mac OS X menubar. When you see that, select the Disk Utility menu item and that will run Disk Utility where "Repair Disk" will be enabled. After you finish with Disk Utility, quit it, cancel the Mac OS X installer, and reboot from your main hard drive.

Ok, thanks for fast response. Tried the Disk Repair from the Leopard install disk. Ran it on all 2 internal disks and the external. Also tried Permissions repair while I was at it.
Tried re-installing NeoOffice from last year's down load - same Install fail error message. Tried from a recent download, so completely different file, and got exactly the same result. Gets to about 21 or 22% files installed and then bombs out. It only installs a NeoOffice package into the applications folder and this has a slashed circle symbol over it.
So cleared it all off again and tried installing to the second internal hard disk. Got to about 37% this time, then same error message again. Still only a package created in an applications directory.

It sounds to me like that Mac OS X installer tool is failing for some unknown reason. To help us figure out where Apple's installer tool is failing, can you do the following?:

1. Select the Apple :: About this Mac menu and tell us what Mac OS X version is displayed

2. Delete your ~/Library/Preferences/org.neooffice.NeoOffice.plist file (note that "~" means your Home folder) and rerun the NeoOffice 2.2.5 installer. If the installation fails, select the installer's Window :: Installer Log menu and in the dialog that appears, select the "Show Everything" option. Then, past the last 40 or so lines in that dialog into this forum topic.

1) Mac OS X 10.5.6

2) There is no ~/Library/Preferences/org.neooffice.NeoOffice.plist file. The only org.anything file in that directory is org.mozilla.firefox.plist

Tried the install again and got the error again. Last 40 odd lines of the log:-

The above lines in the installer log indicate that the .dmg file that you have is corrupted. Although the file size of your .dmg file is that same as ours on the server, it is possible that the file's bits are getting corrupted during download.

To see if this is the case, can you launch the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, type the following command in the Terminal window, type a space after the command, drag the .dmg file into the Terminal window (to copy the .dmg file's path into the Terminal window), and press the Return key?

Code:
md5

The above will print out the 32 character MD5 checksum of the .dmg file. If you file is not corrupt, the output in the terminal should match the following exactly:

OK done that. Both the old and new download .dmg produce exactly the same checksum.

Well, if that is the case, then there is definitely something that is not right with the Apple's Mac OS X installer tool that is on your machine as that is what is failing: Apple's installer tool is failing to unzip the contents of the installation package.

Since the installer works on our machines, the MD5 checksum indicates that you have an uncorrupted .dmg file, and there isn't other reports of this same problem, the next thing to check is if customizations (also known as system hacks) to your machine are interfering with the Mac OS X installer tool.

To determine if you have any system hacks installed on your machine, can you do the following steps?:

1. Can you tell us which version of Mac OS X is displayed when you select the Apple :: About this Mac menu? Are you running 10.4.11?

2. Can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, paste the following commands in the Terminal application window, press the Return key, and paste the output into this forum topic?:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers
ls -l ~/Library/Application\ Support
ls -l /Library/InputManagers
ls -l /Library/Application\ Support

Nope - definitely 10.5.6 although it is an upgrade from a previous Tiger installation

2. Can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, paste the following commands in the Terminal application window, press the Return key, and paste the output into this forum topic?:

Your output indicates that you have a system hack installed on your machine. Can you disable the following system hack that is installed on your machine?:

/Library/InputManagers/LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader

You disable this system hack by moving the above folder to your Desktop and rebooting. You can find the folders by double-clicking on the main volume icon on your desktop and, in the Finder window that appears, navigating down through the Library and InputManagers folders to find the LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader folder.

After moving the LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader folder out of the /Library/InputManagers folder and rebooting, does the NeoOffice installer still fail?

Oh so near!
I got rid of LCC Scroll Enhancer as described (hard work as it wouldn't let me just delete it - had to copy to desktop and then trash the original), emptied the trash and rebooted.
The next install got to 100% files and then I got the Install Fail message again. NeoOffice actually appeared in the Application directory and also nearly worked, I could open some spreadsheets and docs but not presentations. Went through the delete, tidy up, reboot and re-install process several times with different downloads. I get quite a long way through the install then the Install fail comes up again.

Is the message "No such file or directory - ./Contents/THIRDPARTYLICENSEREADME.html" in the 9th line up relevant?

I've discovered that LCC Scroll Enhancer Loader is part of the Logitec Mouse software and lots of people have been having trouble with it. I installed a Logitec Marble Mouse and a NuLOOQ some time early last year so this is where the LCC has come from. As these have been superseded by a Wacom Tablet, I'm currently trying to find out how to delete all their drivers and associated junk.

Thanks, Adrian

Yes. It shows that for some reason, there are serious problems with the Mac OS X installer tool.

When the Mac OS X installer tool cannot unzip files and you have disabled all system hacks, the likely cause is that one or more files in the Mac OS X installer tool is corrupted. We have seen this before when users have system hacks on their machines and they upgrade to Leopard.

The bad news is that the only clean way to restore the Mac OS X installer tool's original files is by reinstalling Mac OS X 10.5 with the "Archive and Install" option.

Since that is a very big change to your machine, you might want to try restoring the Mac OS X installer tool from the Mac OS X 10.5 installation CD using a tool like Pacifist and restore the following folders. I have not personally used Pacifist, but many people on this site have reported that it was useful for them:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework
/System/Library/Frameworks/InstallerPlugins.framework
/Application/Utilities/Installer.app

If you go this route, you probably also want to re-install the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update after extracting the files from the original 10.5 install DVD, as it's likely that various Mac OS X "point" updates were supposed to have patched those files to fix bugs or security holes.

The fact that the installer is able to unzip half of the files before it chokes seems odd to me. Are you sure that you have enough disk space available on your main volume? To see if disk space is an issue, can you launch the /Application/Utilities/Terminal application, copy the following command into the Terminal window, press the Return key, and paste the output into this topic?:

Code:
df -k
