I read this article on TidBITS today with interest:

http://db.tidbits.com/article/10062

On OS X 10.4.11 this is possible to do with NeoOffice 3.0EA. Would it be difficult to add a check for the file's location on opening, or is this deep in the OpenOffice code?

Andy.

This is a nice thought. However, the cost to NeoOffice performance is huge and given that this is really a user error (the user did move it to the Trash first in this case), we are not going to implement a fix for this.

While a fix took me only about an hour of work, I found that the Mac SO X code needed to check if each file is a file in the Trash causes NeoOffice to require nearly 10 minutes to launch. You may wonder why it takes so long, but NeoOffice opens and reads a lot of files at startup and filtering out the paths that are not likely to be in the Trash was nearly as horrible in performance as just checking if the file is in the Trash.
