PostPosted: Tue May 05, 2009 3:11 am    Post subject: Footnote number (in footnote text) - superscript?

I'm using NeoOffice 3.0 patch 2 (I'm a new user) and trying to make the footnote ref. number in the footnote zone at the bottom of a wordprocessed document (Writer) into a superscript number (as per the standard MS Word format). The footnote anchor number in the main text is automatically in superscript, but I can't find a way of changing the number in the footnote text area.

When I've tried modifying the style, the whole footnote simply becomes superscript (text and number) which I don't want.

Any advice would be really gratefully received.

The footnote number is controlled by a character style called Footnote Characters. To access it choose Format > Styles and Formatting. In the Styles and Formatting window click the Character Styels button at the top (the next one in from the left it has a letter 'A' on it), ensure that 'All' is showing in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the window.

Right-click or Control click the Footnote Characters entry in the window and select Modify from the contextual menu that appears. In the Character Style: Footnote Characters window click the Position tab and check the Superscript button. This will automatically set a Relative Font Size for the superscripted character, which you can adjust if you wish. Click OK to accept your changes and see them applied.

Hope this helps Smile

Excellent, this worked perfectly. I just completely didn't spot the separate button to modify 'character' in the 'Styles and Formatting' window. Many thanks! I really love NeoOffice (even after just a week!), and was sure there must be some easy answer Laughing

FYI, we have an entire article in the wiki devoted to the styles used in footnotes.
