|
For the second time now in a week, i got a strange error when trying to save an ods file. when i tried to save, i simply got an error saying "error saving file" (as best I can remember...). When i copied the sheet to a new file, i was able to save the new file. in the original file i was forced to discard my changes.
some facts:
1. I am using macbook (late 2008 aluminum model) 2.4ghz with 4gb ram
2. the file i was trying to save had been open for probably 5 days, maybe more, as i routinely put my laptop to sleep without shutting down.
3. the file is a spreadsheet i use to track my workhours so i usually keep it open in the background.
Is there any connection between the fact that the file had been open for a long time and this error?
any other ideas?
Thank you.
Yaron

This is a known bug (specifically, Issue 6395) in the underlying OpenOffice.org code. It is, unfortunately, not something the NeoOffice project can fix, we have to wait for OpenOffice.org to get around to fixing it.
It is discussed in this thread and this thread in our forums. At least one user has found that they can work around it by "Saving As" an xls document.

OK, at least now I know what's going on... so, I can make sure i don't just leave stuff open for extended periods, until the bug is fixed.
Thanks again.

For any who experiences this bug, yaronof mentioned another workaround that we have found to work: select the Edit :: Select All menu and then select the Edit :: Copy menu. Then, select the File :: New menu to open a new, empty document, paste what you copied into the new document, and save the new document.

In the event that this happens in a Calc worksheet, as was the case for me, the workaround is even simpler. Select menu Edit::Sheet::Move/Copy. Remember to check the "copy" box at the bottom of the dialog window. The dialog gives a built in option of selecting a new workbook as the destination. |

Thanks for posting this workaround. This is an excellent and more complete workaround than the other workarounds that we have used.
