Simple question.

In a Drawing document, I make an object, I hit the arrow key and it moves about 4 points. It is very hard to align objects this way.

Is there a setting for the amount of movement of the arrow keys?

You can directly set the distance that the arrow key moves an object but you can increase or decrease the number of pixels that an object moves by changing the "zoom" percentage of your document.

To decrease the number of pixels that the arrow key moves an object, select the Edit :: Zoom menu and in the dialog that appears, increase the zoom percentage. Generally, doubling the zoom percentage will halve the number of pixels that the arrow key moves and object.

Does increasing the zoom percentage decrease the the distance that an object moves for you?

Also, if you want to skip trying to visually align an object and, instead, want to set its exact coordinates, you can do so by Control-clicking on an object and selecting the Position and Size option from the popup menu that appears.

No, that didn't seem to work. I drew two parallel lines and, selecting one, use the arrow keys to move them together. Whether I'm in 400% or 800% the movements step to the very same positions. In 800% the steps are twice as big (but end up in the same location as at 400%).

This seems really odd and I've looked at any 'snap to grid' or 'snap to anything else' for an answer to the large movement but that doesn't seem to be the answer. I've been using 'snap to object frame/points' to get the objects to meet, in the past.

It appears that you were saying, in your post, that the arrow keys can not be set to move the object one pixel. If that's the case then what I've been doing will work ok.

That is odd as in NeoOffice 3.0.1 Patch 2 I am seeing the movement distance (as a percent of the document's width or height) change when I change the zoom. If you have "snap to grid" turned on, then that is likely why you are seeing different results than me.

Correct. I did say that. But I may have found a way to move one pixel at a time since I made my last post: press the Alt-Shift-Arrow keys.

Does press the Alt-Shift-Arrow keys work? Be sure to turn off "snap to grid" first as I think the Alt-Shift-Arrow keys only work with "snap to grid" disabled.

Yes, that worked! Alt+Shift+Arrow works by moving the object one pixel at a time!

Thanks, I never would have found that combination and that seems to be the answer.

I'm using 3.1.1 now and Alt+Shift+Arrow isn't working for me anymore. Now the one-point move can be made with Alt+Arrow but only if the document is 'text'. It makes sense to me, and I would like it, if the 'Drawing' (.odg) document would also make a one-point move with either the Alt+Arrow or any other way.

I can reproduce this problem in NeoOffice 3.1.1 as well but not in OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 (the version that NeoOffice 3.1.1 is based on).

I will investigate what is causing this problem and post again when I have some news to report.

I have created bug 3615 to track this issue.

I think I have fixed this bug. Can you install the following test patch and tell us if the bug is fixed for you?:

Intel:
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-3.1.1-Patch-1-Test-8-Intel.dmg

PowerPC:
http://joe.neooffice.org/test/NeoOffice-3.1.1-Patch-1-Test-8-PowerPC.dmg

I downloaded and installed the patch referred to above and was not able to move an object one dot at a time in my .odg document. I'm not sure what key combination to use but none of the previous ones worked for me (eg alt+arrow and shift+alt+arrow).

The one dot move does work in a text document with alt+arrow.

With the test patch I have no problem moving an image object in and .odg file when I press the Shift-Alt-Arrow keys so can you attach a sample document that we can use to try and reproduce what you see?

Please ignore my last post. I found that the test patch did not include the binary file that has the fix in so I have uploaded corrected test patches. Can you redownload the test patch and tell us if the fix works for you?

I reinstalled and...

Yes, that worked! I used alt+arrow and the object moves just one pixel.

Thanks Very Happy

FYI. I have included the fix in NeoOffice 3.1.1 Patch 2. The patch can be downloaded from the NeoOffice patch download page.
