Using NeoOffice 2.2.6, in a text document I have got a line across a page which I cannot delete. It is an old document I am editing. I usually make a continuous line with the underscore (?) key. In this case I followed it with a manual page break. I can put the cursor above this line but not on it. Fiddling around, I can now place it below the line as well - but neither delete nor backspace affects the line. I thought perhaps I could ignore it and push it to the end of the document with the return key. But that left one line at the bottom of the first page and placed a new line on the second page. help! I want rid of this line but don't know how.

It sounds like the line that you see is a "section break". Can you try the following steps?

1. Use your mouse to select both the text above and below the line that you want to remove.

2. Select the Format :: Sections menu. In the dialog that appears, press the Remove button and then press the OK button.

Do the above steps remove the line?

Thanks, Patrick. But, alas, No. I did as you said but found the 'Section' word in Format was grey and inactive. It is just possible that I created this document in Word form - it's Open Document now - and I wonder if this is something that doesn't translate properly between the two.

Maybe. If so, I noticed that you are using NeoOffice 2.2.6 which is based on the very old OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 code. Our current version - NeoOffice 3.0.2 - is based on the much newer OpenOffice.org 3.0.2 code so you may consider trying the same steps with our newer version if your machine is running Mac OS X 10.4 or higher.

If you want to keep NeoOffice 2.2.6 on your machine, then be sure to rename the /Applications/NeoOffice icon so that the NeoOffice 3.0.2 installer does not overwrite your NeoOffice 2.2.6 installation. I have renamed mine to "NeoOffice-2.2.6" so that I can find and launch NeoOffice 2.2.6 when I need to.

If you still cannot delete the line using my steps in NeoOffice 3.0.2, then can you attach the document so that we can look at it? You can attach the document using the steps in this forum post.

You might also try Format: Default Formatting(?) (I don't have NeoOffice in front of me here) with the line selected.

It could also be a paragraph border; Default Formatting should clear it in that case, but the Borders tab in the Formatting window can also manipulate those.

Patrick, Thanks for your help. I have Mac OSX 10.3.9 so I cannot use NeoOffice 3. Some more information came to mind - I wrote this document about 1 year ago, before the recent 2.2. version (I suppose it was 2.1 then). Almost definitely I wrote it on the Mac, but I do remember some difficulty removing a line when I was working with another of my documents on a PC where I do some volunteer work. I have just tried to copy out the surrounding text into a blank document, leaving the first line behind, but the line came too. I find that backspacing above the line moves the lower text up past the line, as if the line is in some sort of fixed position. On one of these experiments, doing this then produced a 3rd line a short way below the top one. I suspect that usually I have made a hard return after typing a line and before inserting a page break, but this time I left out the hard return. I can live with the lines remaining in the text, but they will be in a public document so I'd rather have them removed - and know how to avoid the problem again. "Standards, you chaps!" Oh dear, I want to attach the document but I don't know how to select so that the 'Add Attachment' button works.

Smokey, thanks for the suggestion but, no, it didn't work. However, your suggestion about Borders has some relevance. In Format - Borders I noticed a certain thickness of line is selected and I could not make "None" stick, even though I selected 'No Borders'. It's a mystery .

When you click reply, scroll down in the resulting window to the Add an Attachment section and click the 'Choose File' button. This will open a chooser dialog for you to navigate to your file and select it. Once you have selected a file the 'Choose' button in the window becomes active. Click it and the name of your file now appears next to the 'Choose File' button. You can add a comment or description if you wish in the 'File Comment' box then you need to click the 'Add Attachment' button to upload the file. Then submit your post in the usual way. Does that help?

Thanks Patrick. I thought I was cornered into opening the file (I didn't notice the title at the top of the window 'File Uploading'). Here is the file. The offending lines are on pages 6 and 8

I cannot reproduce your problem in either NeoOffice 2.2.6 Patch 5 or NeoOffice 3.0.2 Patch 2 on my machines. All of the lines of pages 6 and 8 contain only text. The only lines that I see is the underlining that you set for the header's text.

Can you tell us which NeoOffice 2.2.6 patch you are using by selecting the Help :: About NeoOffice menu?

I have Patch 5 for 2.2.6. The "invisible" lines come after the text on each of the two pages (I have pushed them down towards the bottom of the two pages). I wonder if the fact that you cannot see them is linked to the fact that I cannot get the cursor to "cover" them. I wish I knew whether I had modified this file when it was in Word form and I was using the PC at Powis Castle (where I volunteer). I am disappointed that the "reveal codes" button in the NeoOffice toolbar only shows spacing and hard returns (I have little experience with computers but it began with WordPerfect which showed all operations). I apologise for taking up so much of your time. Perhaps I will have to delete the last few pages and type them up again - but I fear the lines will return to haunt me!

If you press the Print toolbar button and then press the Preview button, do the lines appear when your document appears in the Preview application?

If not, then the lines may merely be stray uncleared pixels on your screen. On Mac OS X 10.3.9, Apple's Java has many bugs that were not fixed until well after Mac OS X 10.4 was released. For example, on Mac OS X 10.3.9 when a new window opens, the entire window is completely black for a moment. This is one of those Apple Java bugs that Apple eventually fixed.

I had a moment of hope then, but, alas, the lines are there in Preview as bold and cold as brass.

Can you take a small screen snapshot of the line and the surrounding text by pressing the Command-Shift-4 keys and then using the mouse to highlight the line and its surrounding text? This will create a "Picture <some>.png" file on your Desktop. If you can attach that, I should have a clearer idea of what you are seeing on your machine.

I hope "Picture 1" is the snapshot!
