I had two documents open (in this case : a large text doc and a presentation).

I noticed that if I minimised the text document to the dock and worked on the presentation, NeoOffice was very sluggish. If I closed the large text doc and worked on the presentations, NeoOffice was much snappier.

The background document had been open for a long time, so it couldn't have been an initial wave of recalculating. I also have 4GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be a problem.

This makes me wonder, is Neo doing flow/draw/spellcheck calculations for documents that are in the background?

I can see a use for calculating spreadsheets in the background (in case of links), but otherwise I would suggest only finishing an ongoing update of a background document, and not do it over and over again.

Just wondering if easy performance gains can be made here.

Best wishes,
Oscar

If it is well past the initial wave of layout and spellchecking, then there should not be any additional layout or spellchecking until you make changes to the document.

So, the question is what is actually happening? If things are slow and you have lots of memory, CPU is the thing to watch for. When this happens, can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor application, click on the "% CPU" tab and see if NeoOffice is consistently above 20% CPU.

If NeoOffice is using most of the CPU, can you take a sample of the NeoOffice process and attach the sample using the steps in this NeoWiki article? Hopefully the sample will tell us what activity is actually occurring in NeoOffice that is consuming a lot of CPU.
