Open Letter to Jonathan Schwartz

StarOffice Recently, it has come to our attention that Sun Microsystems, a large user of NeoOffice, has officially entered the Mac porting space. In true open source style, the only possible way to address this is through an open letter. Read on for our open letter to Jonathan Schwartz and Sun Microsystems regarding their breakthrough announcement.

It makes absolutely no sense for Sun to start over and ignore the massive efforts NeoOffice have contributed to the Mac user. It's redundant, and downright illogical, to not build on NeoOffice's rendition of OpenOffice.org as the official branch.

Now that OpenOffice.org has re-re-committed to the Mac platform, tapping NeoOffice's dominant Office alternative would be the optimal starting point.

I urge (and don't doubt) Sun will do the logical thing and build on what NeoOffice has achieved and where the open source community has been most effective.
I think an area where Sun can especially contribute is where the open source community is least effective: namely marketing and the commissioning of printed user guides and publications like "OpenOffice for dummies" to fill shelf space in the bookshops where a lot of people make their purchasing and technology decisions.

Last time there was such an announcement ( OOo Mac Cocoa ) I was greatly upset and concerned about the fate of NeoOffice.
That was over a year ago. During that time NeoOffice has been greatly improved, and we are still waiting for a pre-Alpha for Mac version (Carbon) of OOo. The OOo code base needs support efforts from as many skills programmers as possible. It's a HUGE project and I welcome all contributions. Welcome Sun programmers!

This time, I'll help the whole OOo community improve it's support for Users.
OH, and sip a Microbrew, or two! ;-)

P.S. Dear mr. Schwartz,

Actually, instead of hiring more people, you could make an offer to Patrick and Ed to sell their codebase to you. It will only be a mild six figure sum, and it is probably worth at least a year in time having a seasoned programmer get used to the OOo codebase and Mac peculiarities.

However, beer is always good.

There is a lot of server space translation work, help in stuff like video and audio in the Macintosh that Sun can provide for both the OpenOffice Aqua and NeoOffice. Maybe a project merger can be of much benefit for the main NeoOffice developers.

Hello,

I am just writing to congratulate you for such a great software program.

I am not a tech person but do not understand why Sun is making the wheel again since you already have developed this program.

When I bought my first Macbook after coming from Windows I decided that I wanted to use something new and I found out that your program was about to come out with an Intel release. I therefore participated in the first NeoOffice Early Access Program for the Intel platform and since then I have been a happy camper.

I like your latest aesthetic improvement in particular the Cristal icon style which I think is the nicest.

The programs you have work geat and I onestly can say that it gets nicer by the day and I do not miss MSOffice.

So thank you again for taking the time to make such a nice product.

It is a noble gesture to share your skills with others for free, even though I have to admit that I did pay once at the beginning.

Well it has been worth it and I thank you for it! :-)

This is so depressing. The "send free beer" sounds to me like defeat in the face of irrational opposition. I've spent several hours reading threads at OOo and blogs, and there are a lot of people pulling for NeoOffice.

This is a crucial moment for people to step up to the plate ($$); as I understand it, there are a few bumps in the road, one being changes to the latest Apple iteration of Java that are challenging, there is no more OOo development of the X11 version, hence the newest code is no longer available to the NeoOffice team, and the announcement of Sun providing 2 full-time programmers to the OOo Aqua port will cause some expectant (naive?) users to withhold donations to NeoOffice (the OOo Aqua version will be Carbon, not Cocoa, btw). Fact is, Sun has made promises concerning the Mac platform before and has failed to deliver; also there is some kind of weird hubris among the OOo people, who seem to have marginalized NeoOffice, e.g. where the only link you can find in OOo pages to NeoOffice is from their Wiki. Open software development sure doesn't automatically mean open minds when it comes to sharing experience.

If we don't get our priorities straight, we could end up with the worst of Office alternative worlds: unexpected (but predictable) complications in the OOo Aqua port, NeoOffice fading due to lack of support, leaving only $$ for Pages (nice app, but try importing any complex MS files), or coughing up big bucks for the upcoming Mac MS Office 2008 suite, both of which defeat the whole idea of the open software movement.

Disclaimer: I have no association with the NeoOffice people, and I've only sent a small contribution ('cause I'm dirt poor). Contribute now or be in office suite hell in a year from now.

P.S. Wine is good too.

Jonathan,
Please collaborate with Neo Office team!

Re-inventing the wheel will not help the need for a strong office suite like Neo Office for the Mac.

Thanks!

Dear Jonathon. I'd suggest delivery via the only open-source brewer worth it's hops, www.brewtopia.com.au A case with a label of your own making would be nice.. but if not then you may be the recipient of a case of Muppet Lager [beerbuilder.brewtopia.com.au].

I support & encourage Sun's interest in sharing in the development of Open Office Aqua for both the PPC & Intel Macs. I started working with the Sun OS in 1989 & still love working with Unix, every chance I get! VR, Ron S.

There's already a pretty good MacOS port of Open Office, and it's called NeoOffice. It's reliable (better than the Windows version) and easy to use. With your help it can only get better.

Oh, and yes thanks, I'd love a beer. Paulaner, bitte schön!

I certainly support the Neo Office team - great product.

I would love to see it be more Mac like however, and not just stick so strictly to the limitations of Staroffice. Hopefully beer could make the difference there.

It seems a small reward for the magnificent effort; small beer indeed.

Forget the gnat's pee you get over there. Send Rail Ale, Piston Bitter or Sleeper from the Beer Engine at Newton St Cyres in Devon. Add some real bread and mature Cheddar cheese (also unavailable stateside, I hear) and you have a feast fit for a king (ditto).

NeoOffice is an excellent user interface for OpenOffice on the Mac. It fully meets Mac Users needs. Sun should send beer and support to the NeoOffice team. NeoOffice uses Java. Just as Java (coffee) adds to breakfast, so does Java added to OpenOffice making a great combination. The best way to showcase Sun's technology on the Mac is thru Java and OpenOffice.

Build on what is great to make something greater.

I use Neo at my home and at my office and have so for years. The level of tight integration to the Mac is unparalled. Oddly enough Neo implements Sun technology and is a poster child for Sun's development model. How do you respond when folks actually deliver on the promise of your own technology? Have a listen to "Why Can't We Be Friends" by War and have a beer or two with us.
