FYI. I announced the release of NeoOffice/J 0.8 at http://trinity.neooffice.org/.
Basically, NeoJ 0.8 is "patch-10" plus some changes to the NeoJ Info.plist file to prevent NeoJ from replacing other applications as the default application for certain file extensions (e.g. TextEdit for *.rtf files, MSOffice for *.ppt files, etc.).

Well, I promised my wife that I would actual get around to doing some much needed repair and maintenance work on the house as soon as I got copy and paste done. Since her salary makes my NeoJ work possible, I should probably probably spend a few weeks working through those issues to ensure that my "grant funding" keeps flowing.

NeoOffice/J 8.0 is really great. Thank you so much! I noticed the Stylist docking feature now works.. a wonderful surprise.

Congratulations Patrick,
NeoOffice/J 0.8 is very sweet! The improved copy & paste has convinced me to transition from OOo 1.0.3 (X11) -> NeoOffice/J This is no small decision for me, since I probably now the quirks and work arounds (e.g. fonts, printing, etc.) for OOo 1.0.3 better than most folks;)
But I am having a little trouble with NeoOffice/J 0.8 and those pesky Symbol and Zapf Dingbats fonts -- they render a boxes:( FWIW nearly all of my other OS X fonts (and all of the others I really care about) render beautifully. And of course Ive had Symbol and Zapf Dingbats working in OOo 1.0.3 (X11) since early in the beta testing.
What I've done to try to fix Symbol & Zapf Dingbats in NeoOfficeJ...
1 - I've checked for and removed possible font conflicts in the various OS X font folders (e.g. /System/Library/Fonts, /Library/fonts, ~/Library/Fonts and the Classic System/Fonts directories) -- the only version of Symbol and Zapf Dingbats are the .dfonts in /System/Library/Fonts.
2- I've looked for .afm files in ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ/user/psprint/font metric -- none found.
3- Searched Trinity and OOoDocs fora for posts referencing Symbol and Zapf Dingbats and NeoOfficeJ -- none found.
A few questions...
1- It appears the NeoOfficeJ stores user settings etc. in ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ/user. Is there anywhere else I should look for user settings storage and possible conflicts?
2- Where does NeoOfficeJ stored shared configuration info?
3- Does NeoOfficeJ utilize the share directory in the package contents? For example, if I manually placed TrueType fonts in /Applications/NeoOfficeJ/Contents/share/fonts/truetype, would they be used?

No. All user configuration data is stored in the ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ directory. Furthermore, there is no .sversionrc file dependency like in OOo.

In /Application/NeoOfficeJ.app/Contents/share directory. Note that since NeoJ is a shared installation, mucking with these files will affect all users on your system.

Since NeoJ uses Java which uses native fonts, fonts are pulled from the standard /Library/Fonts and ~/Library/Fonts directory. Given that many OOo users have grown used to putting fonts in OOo's share/fonts/truetype directory, at startup NeoJ will create softlinks in your ~/Library/Fonts directory to any files in your /Applications/NeoOfficeJ/Contents/share/fonts/truetype directory.

So that's where those soft links came from;) I thought I had accidentally created them while dragging various fonts into and out of ~/Library/Fonts.
Thanks for the clear and concise answers to my previous queries. But I still have that one burning question...
Is anyone else having trouble getting Symbol and Zapf Dingbats to render correctly in NeoJ or is this a 'personal problem'?
FWIW I still running Jaguar 10.2.6.

| I knew I wasn't crazy! I still have the underlining problem with Japanese input in version 0.8. I have a theory as to why; I'll test it out and get back to you later. |

Is the underline a thin underline on certain lines? If so, this problem is due to the fact that the OOo code draws a thick underline by drawing a rectangle and, with certain zoom settings, a 2 pixel wide rectangle (the think underline) gets turned into a 1 pixel wide rectangle.
The only workaround that I have found is to increase the zoom setting in the View -> Zoom menu item.
Let me know if you are seeing a different problem.

I can confirm the problem with Symbol and Zapf Dingbats, also with Apple Symbols and Hoefler Text Ornaments. I have similar problems with OOo 1.0.3--is there a known fix for that?
I'm running Panther 10.3.2. |

There is no fix as we don't know what the problem is yet.
Does ZapfDingbats work in the TextEdit application? ZapfDingbats is a Mac OS X system font so if it does not work there, then the problem is that these fonts are disabled or corrupted.

Ok, well now I feel stupid. But to my defense, the underlining works correctly in other programs (such as Word) regardless of the zoom. Is this problem a symptom of the implementation, or because it's Java, or something else? |

Don't feel stupid. I spent several hours debugging this problem before I finally figured out why it was happening.
I believe that this is a problem in OpenOffice.org's Writer code. Internally, Writer tracks all coordinates at a fine grain level (i.e. 25400 units per inch) whereas your screen has a very course resolution (e.g. 72 dots per inch). So, when writer draws lines, shapes, and text, it converts its internal coordinates to your screen coordinates using integer arithmetic so all conversions round downward and never round upward as one would expect.

no, but it fails differently: when you select it, TextEdit automatically switches to some other font. If you have something written in it in a Word doc (which works fine), and open it in TextEdit, it displays correctly, but you can't edit it--any typing is displayed in a different font. |
