I was just checking in the /Library/Receipts folder for items I could safely ditch, and came across the Receipt package for Adobe Reader v9, which weighs in at 41Mb - the next biggest item is a Qucktime update, and that only comes in at 5.4Mb. What on earth are Adobe doing with all that package data anyway? Not that 41Mb is a lot of spaceon a 120Gb drive, but still...

Installing the 50K of 4B files that make up Adobe WorldControl.app 
And then they'll do it again when you install Adobe Reader 9.0.1, and there's another 41MB gone....

| This gets more hilarious - by an interesting coincidence, the size of the AR9 Receipt is exactly the same size as the AR9 installer pkg. So they're basically copying the installer pkg as the Receipt of itself. I suppose I should just be thankful that CS4 doesn't do the same, or that'd be another Gb gone... |

| I'm interested to know why anyone in their right mind would download Adobe Reader for OS X when Preview does such a good job of displaying PDFs. Adobe Reader is the very epitome of bloat-ware. It is a truly awful piece of software engineering. |

I always liked Abobe Reader on my intel mac but then I installed in on my old G4 iBook and it's soooooo slow at scrolling... I tried Preview and it's so much faster!

In my case it's because higher ups in the church send me pdf forms and files that Preview can't handle. I use Preview whenever I can, and put up with Adobe Reader when I have to.

For me it's quite simply that Preview has a lack of any useful %ge zoom control, and without that I'm almost always looking at pages that are either too small to read, or way too big and needing lots of scrolling. AR may be a lot fatter, but visually it's a much easier app in which to actually read PDF docs, which is the whole point  .

Except that Preview does an awful job of displaying table borders unless you zoom in; thin black borders often look like fuzzy gray borders… |

Is this the way the Adobe organises its 'detect and repair' feature? Just copy the original installer somewhere as a backup..

You know you can ctrl-click on the toolbar, choose Customize... and add a percentage box for scale? Seems adequate to me, so long as you know it's there. |

Okay, that's just plain embarrassing... but I still find the pages-side-by-side feature of AR more friendly .

| I'm a reluctant user of AR, but there are sometimes things that can't easily be read in Preview. I'm intrigued by the pages side by side comment. Is it just the AR offers you a simple toolbar button option for this as opposed to Preview's View::PDF Display submenu, or is there more in AR that I have missed? |

No, it's just that I never noticed that option in Preview before (sigh...)
I can't quite put my finger on it, but even with that, I still find AR easier to read PDFs with. Oh, and AR has the 'Export all as text' option - now tell me Preview does that too .

*edit* ...and of course, now Preview does this too - cmd-a and then cmd-c and drop it into a text file or wherever. I suppose that the last time I actually checked what Preview was capable of was somewhere around Panther - things have changed! Now the only thing keeping me in AR is the soothing black background.
*edit edit* ...and now you can change Preview's background colour too. Over and out... |

Well the window background colour is settable in Preferences in Preview. The thing that I would like to do in Preview that I can't is see all the buttons I have set up in my tool bar whatever page size I'm viewing in. This would involve a separable toolbar or palette.

...er, sorry... the only thing really left about Preview that I don't like is its failure to actually go to full screen when you maximise it. AR does that fine, of course. For quick and dirty, I was using PDFView for a while, but it got discontinued so I'm using Skim these days, which remembers window size settings and all that malarky, and has note-taking capability, not that I've ever used it.
