newbie to openoffice

Hello,

I'm an openoffice newbie, hoping to replace the M$ stuff in my company. I personally use a Mac with OSX, but many of our editors and authors swear by windows.

What I'm trying to find out is how close openoffice is to Word and if it is a viable solution to getting rid of the beast on our machines. Here is a list of the features we would need:

PDF creation (already done with the print command in osx)
Image support for cover matter
VERY IMPORTANT: Track changes and comments.

Are the track changes and comments available and compatible with MS Word?

If I could replace my M$ on my machine with something that looks like OSX and acts like Word, I would be a happy little girl. I tried using the regular version of OpenOffice but I just can't get used to the boxy look (geesh, I hope Intel doesn't ruin the beautiful look of the Mac!)

well, unfortunatly the actual look of the progam has not changed with Neo/J. It is, however, better integrated (such as native printing). As for Writer's abilities vs. Word's, the two are very compriable in the respects you bring up. I often bring home huge word docs with images and tracked changes, work on them, and send them back to work, and no one is the wiser to the fact that i didn't use word.

I am simply astounded by the ease of use and compatibility of openoffice and neooffice.

I do not have the complete data from my microsoft loving editor, but I hope it works for her because if it does, I will be converting all my editors and recommending our authors do the same Wink

I searched for this on wiki and didn't see anything. I need to export to the following formats:

.lit (microsoft reader)
.pdb (palm reader)
iSiloX
MobiPocket
kml (not xml)

Does anyone know if there are any scripts or plugins that allow an export of these formats?

I highly doubt if there are export filters for those at this time. There was an OpenOffice.org project that was focusing on a "lite" XML format at one time but I have no clue if it made any progress or the like:

I see that you are a publisher. I would suggest sending some e-mails to the documentation project of OpenOffice. Alot of people that are on that e-mail list are writers and publishers. So they might have good answers to any specific questions and maybe if you are so moved you can get involved. Wink
