The ZDNET guy whose blog they're referring to, George Ou, has made a habit about criticizing OOo for months, at least. I suspect he's found it to be a good generator of hits as well as vitriolic commentary in their "talkback" comment section.

Unfortunately, he's really taking just a narrow view by comparing OpenOffice.or/StarOffice on Win32 to Microsoft Office and finding nitpicks, essentially, to continually claim MS Office is better. In a narrow Windows-centric view of the world, his argument is nearly irrefutable.

The world doesn't run on Windows, however. For some platforms, OOo is the only solution (think Solaris, Tru64, IRIX, ...). (okay, not the only one, but the most full featured one). That in and of itself is worth more than all the tea in China for some of us and no criticism can remove the simple thrill of knowing that it *exists* Smile

I hate M$ 'hacks' that think the entire world runs on Office.

And add a few more operating systems to the list. After most producers abandoned OS/2, StarOffice/OpenOffice is still available. I got rid of my OS/2 based compilers, but if I still had them, I would be able to build OOo for OS/2.
