Installer Fails Panther/Apple's X11

Help!

Here is the steps I have taken to install openoffice on my ibook.

1. Goto http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/download and get Apple’s version of X11 and install the software on your Machintosh HD.

2. Open up Finder and search your local disks for X11SDK.pkg and install it and install the software on your Machintosh HD.

Note: If you had a previsous version of X11 installed (e.g. from Fink) you will need to delete .xinitrc in you home directory.

3. Goto http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php and get Fink and install the software on your Macintosh HD.

4. Run Terminal.app (in Finder -> Applications -> Utilities) and if you haven’t done so already, create an aliasis on your desktop. (Hold option+command and drag the icon to your desktop).

5. Update Finks database of applications that you are able to install.

Enter sudo apt-get update

Note: The command sudo enables super-user status. Similiar to root access on Linux and Administrator on Windows.

6. Get the compatibility packages dlcompat-dev.

Enter sudo apt-get install dlcompat-dev

7. Create a symlink for the file libdl.0.dylib in the directory /sw/lib/ to the /usr/local/lib directory.

Enter cd /usr/local/lib
Enter sudo ln -s /sw/lib/libdl.0.dylib

8. Goto http://star.mfn.unipmn.it/osxgnu/Libraries/dlcompat-10505X.pkg.sit and get the installer for the rest of the compatibility packages.

10. Goto http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/ooo-osx_downloads.html and get the .dmg file for Darwin.


This is as far as I can get. Please be aware this is not an official setup guide, just something that I am in the progress of writing. Your help is appreciated in completing this install of OpenOffice.

Well it turned out to be an old Windows trick. Reboot! What happened is my JVM was did not have enough memory to run the installation. So if you follow the above steps, you'll have openoffice running on apples x11! Just remember, the openoffice installer is very large and requires a lot of resources.

For OS 10.1 and 10.2, the OOo dmg installer includes dlcompat already. I haven't tried using the old installer on a 10.3 box yet, but I'm pretty sure that the dlcompat on there will stil work. Nothing wonky changed. I don't think that the dlcompat step should be necessary, but am unsure.

Note that the OOo will also ask you if you want XFree or Apple X11...the installer itself doesn't require X11 to be preinstalled. The current incarnation can't install Apple X11, but the next installer version will be able to propmt you for the Panther CD and fire off the installation automagically

For those who don't want to use fink (see my fink rant somewhere else...) I highly recommend the osxgnu project as it's got nice Apple Installer packages and puts things in the right place on the hard drive:

DarwinPorts also recently came online:

which is the intended successor to fink and other package based installers.
