|
The DNS flaked out yesterday again for some reason and I'll be doing work on that machine this weekend now that I'm back home again This caused trinity, www, etc. to be down for a while. I just finished configuring an updated secondary DNS and the address change should be propogating to the TLD servers over the process of the day. Once it's through trinity should continue to be accessible even if the main DNS server goes batty. Sorry for the downtime, and thakns to my friend for rebooting it while I was away!

As a small favour, could some folk outside the US open a Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type the following:
Code: |
nslookup secondary.dashboardbuddha.com
|
That is the machine that I've configured to be our fallback DNS server for when the primary is offline due to DoS attacks. If the result of the above command says "206.72.79.247" on the last "Address:" line, please let me know a "yes" or a "no". Before it may have been "24.7....." something or other.
For those who don't know, nslookup will translate a symbolic name (such as www.neooffice.org) into the numeric IP4 address needed to locate the machine on the Internet. This process is handled by Verisign and other TLD (top level domain) servers and changes to the root information really need 1-2 days to move across the world.
I don't want to take the primary DNS offline for its upgrade until the secondary is happily replying to keep trinity online

From Switzerland : no. Instead I get 24.7 etc.
But I always have trouble with Trinity and anoncvs so it may also be something on my end (?) ... |

No, it's not on your end. It just takes time for all DNSs to sync. Making a change at the top level just takes a long time to propogate to the clients . Most of the time the changes are local to our domain, but this one is different as I'm trying to add a new global server. While some of the servers I've checked here in California have synced to my changes (did them last morning, near 24 hrs. ago) it may be up to 3 days until the world gets the change
Thanks for the 411 so I'll put off the upgrade until Sunday at the latest!

Strange things happen:
Code: | pBook:~/bin martin$ ping secondary.dashboardbuddha.com

Code: | pBook:~/bin martin$ nslookup secondary.dashboardbuddha.com

Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with

I am in Berlin, Germany & connected to T-Online (Deutsche Telekom). Loading http://secondary.dashboardbuddha.com/ into the browser brought trinity home. Any other help needed?

OK, what I suspect you're seeing is a timeout. For better or for worse, right now I'm downloading the OOoCon videocasts onto the neo domain machines so the lack of bandwidth may be affecting your DNS lookup
Conclusion: I need to get a bandwidth shaping filter on the overall connection (or a second connection).
The good news, however, is that you're seeing that 247 address, so it is beginning to move outside the US...yay!!! Network Solutions has a really odd online interface, so I'm glad that it seems that my changes were correct.
Thanks so much for checking it out!
