Posted: Thu Mar 29, 2007 11:54 am Post subject: Help pasting table in NeoOffice Writer |
|
I have some data I want to get out of a FileMaker database into an existing table, and I can't figure out how to do it. (I don't want to "link" the data, just get it into a text document)
I can save the data as an excel file or a text (tab delimited) file (among other formats).
If I save it as an excel, I can open it in the spreadsheet module of NeoOffice, but I can't figure out how to get that data transferred as a table into the Writer module.
If I save it as text delimited, open it in a text editor, and try to paste it, it pastes all in the same cell, with all sorts of random sharps and other symbols. If I select multiple cells in the existing table, it pastes the same data into each cell, and then NeoOffice locks up and I have to force-quit it.
Two solutions present themselves: 1) Paste the text into the document with tabs, use convert to table, and then hand-edit to reconstruct the rest of the cells in the table, or 2) save the NeoOffice as ".doc", open in MS Word, paste (which just works!) and then open in NeoOffice.
Is there something I am missing?
PS--perhaps this has been an OpenOffice issue for a while? See http://www.macupdate.com/reviews.php?id=15797&pid=97922 |

I haven't found a nice easy solution to this dilemma either.
Your 1st solution seems to be on the right path but once you have used the convert to table function you can then copy the cells of that table and paste them into another table.
The only caveat is to make sure you have enough empty cells so that it doesn't paste over top of something else.

If you copy cells from a spreadsheet and paste them in to a writer document, the default is for a spreadsheet frame to be created, so provided you can format the spreadsheet to look as you require then that's all you need to do.
If you'd rather have the text in a Writer table then do one of the following:
Choose Edit -> Paste Special
Select Unformatted Text and click OK
Select the (tab delimited) text that is pasted
Choose Table -> Convert -> Text to Table
Make your choices in the dialogue that appears and click OK.
Viola!
Alternatively:
Choose Edit -> Paste Special
Select Formatted text [RTF] and click OK
Your spreadsheet data will be pasted as a table.

Is this in the wiki? If not (and I don't think it is), can someone please add it?

I probably won't be able to get to the English version until after Easter, but I'll put it at the top of my list then, unless someone beats me to it. |

OT, I know, but have a great holiday!! I wish all the joy of the season for you. And the same for all who are Christian/Catholic. Apologies if I missed any of the holidays all grouped around this time for everyone else, as well.

Thanks, Ed. According to my calendar, it's Passover next week, too. I can't speak to any of the other religious traditions.
I serve such a small congregation that it's not as much extra work as it could be, and the extra work that I do have is of the type I enjoy. But the school decided to hold Kindergarten round up, a book fair, and the first soccer practices during Holy Week (the week leading up to Easter); so my family schedule is pretty packed, too.

Maybe I can do some translations into english but I'm afraid that will give more work to Lorinda
Off-topic: I didn't mention that first here, but I am a seminarist, catholic seminarist and I hope I will be ordained priest on 2008... (with the help of your prayers ). |

I translated several articles from French after having asked Smokey if it can be useful or not. Smokey told me that it's always faster and easier to "polish" than to translate the whole article.
So maybe our "foreign English" is better than nothing at all.

So many different religions on this forum, and so much tolerance. If it could be the same in the whole world…

Thank you very much | Oh, Back on topic
Welcome to NeoOffice alanterra, glad you could find some useful information here.
Even better that some of it was related to your question!
