Hi
I am a recently completed postgraduate student in Australia. In this country, Mac is the king of tertiary institutions and I have now become a competent user (but would like to understand more of the nitty-gritty behind it). As a student I also had access to teh Microsft suite for free and have only recently realized how much like extortion paying for it really is - especially as having just completed a thesis using Word I am very familar with how screwy and terrifying word-processing can really be.
I like the spirit of this project and would like to particpate
I am using NeoOffice as I couldn't get Ooo.112 to install on my OS X
One of teh first things I did was try to open my thesis and articles - but all i got was teh following error for each similar to this one:
Error loading documnet file:///Users/davaidpecotic/Desktop/%20thesis%20copy/secondary%20notes/Faivre:
Error creating object.
The file could not be created.
The name of teh file seems to be reflected in teh document as it appears next but no content
Any ideas?
Sorry if there is already a post about it but I could not see one after using a serach

Can you try to open these documents on OpenOffice on Windows or Linux?
If you get the same problems there, too, your Word files seem to contain something that makes problems to OpenOffice in common.
Do your Word documents contain some VBA stuff or embedded objects?

One thing you may want to try to do is rename the files so there are no spaces in the filenames or folders. From the URL above it seems that there's a leading space in one of the names, and I'm unsure if OOo/NeoJ can handle a leading space in a name correctly.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a machine that has a Win or Linus OS
A lot of my docs - the most important ones - were created in Word but with teh assiatnce of Endnote, a bibliographic and reference management software package that is almost essential to completing a thesis these days
so I guess they would work with macros or something (I'm just guessing)? |

anyone else have an idea if the program can handle spaces? |

I just tried with a leading space in the filename and a leading space in the containing folder name and the test doc opened fine (it was sent to me by a Win user rather than a Mac user, but that really shouldn't matter).
Despite Ed's dire warnings about spaces in path/filenames, he, Dan, Patrick, Kevin, and others have done a fine job of ferreting out problematic code in OOo and Neo/J and fixing it 
I wouldn't think Endnote should really be an issue, either 
Any chance you could send one of the problematic documents to one of us? (particularly the coders rather than someone like me  ; they'd be much more able to do some useful debugging than I would...!)

Well, the standard way is to folow the link on in the left bar that says Neo BugZilla. Make a login, enter a new bug and attach the document to that.
This will also ensure Patrick and Ed don't forget about it if it does turn out to be something weird in the code. If it is a fluke, it will just be closed.

I have been to Neo Bugzilla and created a new account but I don't understand how to attatch a doc to it. Do I have to have it uploaded to a website or server first?

Create the bug, then go back the bug and you will be able to attach a document. Unfortunately, you cannot attach a document when you create the bug.
