I'm for it - giving users more functionality sooner is good vs. having to cope with what's been broken in 3.2.x . |

Looks like Patrick made a head start with the 3.1.1 effort .

FYI. I started work on upgrading NeoOffice to the OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 code and yesterday I got the OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 code to build and run on my Intel machine. The next phase - merging all of the NeoOffice code modication that we have written over the last 7 years into the OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 code - still needs to be done and will probably take a few weeks to do.
One of the things that I noticed in my OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 build is that Novell's Go-oo engineers added limited support for saving .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files. I don't doubt that the support is much better than the OdfConverter code that we currently use, but at least the .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx saving code is no longer in a separate command line tool.
Since we will be using many of Novell's Go-oo modifications, I would be interested to know if anyone can install Go-oo 3.1.1.1 on their Intel Mac and tell us if any of their features are odd or broken.
The Go-oo engineers add some features that appeal to Windows or Linux users, but likely don't appeal to Mac users and it would be nice to know if any NeoOffice donors see any such features in Go-oo 3.1.1.1. For example, I found that Go-oo 3.1.1.1 adds a big red exclamation point icon in a document's status bar when there are unsaved changes. Since this duplicates the Mac behavior of putting a black dot in the red "close window" button in the document's titlebar, I removed that particular Go-oo modification from the NeoOffice 3.1.1 build.

The current download offered is 3.2, not 3.1.1.1.
And for the life of me, having installed it, I can't see how to see the 3D transitions in Impress that they highlight. If it worked, it would mimic the Cover Flow transition and would look quite at home on a Mac.
Just an initial observation.
I think the solver function in Calc will definitely be of interest to a colleague but he's on holiday next week so it will be a little time before I can invite him to give it a quick spin. _________________ Ray Saunders

FYI. The 3.1.1.1 download for Mac Intel is here. Are you able to download from that URL? I would definitely recommend looking at their 3.1.1.1 download as I am pretty sure that there are more than a few new features in OpenOffice.org 3.2 (like OpenType font support) that will not work on Mac OS X.

This appears to be new in OpenOffice.org 3.2 as I do not see this in the list of slide transitions in Go-oo 3.1.1.1. Or are they in a different place in the application?

Downloading the 3.1.1.1 version now. Thanks for the direct link. Didn't find my way to it on the Go-OO site but confess not to have hunted too hard.
Like you, I am expecting to find the 3D transitions in the slide transitions list but there doesn't appear to be any in the list in 3.2 either. Curious. Maybe not ported to the MacIntel version?
<edit>
Just read the text: "Go-oo on Linux provides built-in 3D transitions within presentations."
And this "NeoOffice - which provides openoffice for the Mac / OS/X is built on top of the Go-OO! version."[/url]
which some readers might misinterpret to imply NeoOffice is built on their current version....i.e. 3.2... Hmmmm.....

Like how we focus on adding all sorts of Mac-specific features and speed improvements to NeoOffice, the Go-oo engineers are focussed on doing the same for Linux. After all, Novell is a Linux vendor so that is where they are making customizations. Fortunately, the Go-oo engineers do add some features that are cross-platform (like their new save as .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx code) and we definitely include as many of those features as possible.

FYI. After spending the last month carefully merging the OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 code and the Go-oo 3.1.1.1 code modifications with our custom NeoOffice code, I finally got my NeoOffice 3.1.1 build to install and run for the first time last night.
I did a few hours of testing and it appears that the upgrade OpenOffice.org code only broke a few of our custom features and I should have those broken features fixed in the next week or so.
Given the state of my NeoOffice 3.1.1.1 build, I believe that it is now safe to set 6 April 2010 as the start date for the NeoOffice 3.1.1 Early Access Program.
That should give me time to fix any of the loose ends currently in my build as well as give this site's moderators a chance to test drive my build before we release it to Early Access Program members.

Well done. Does this mean that the OOo codebase is becoming more stable, or were you just really careful in merging the Neo code?
best wishes,

It means that only a small number of changes were made by Oracle's OpenOffice.org engineers between their 3.0.1 and 3.1.1 versions and most of those changes were very limited in scope. In contrast, between their 2.2.1 and 3.0.1 versions, they made a huge number of large, incompatible changes.
In other words, most of the changes between OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 and 3.1.1 appear to be ony bug fixes and very small feature changes.

Does NeoOffice 3.1.1 still use code from ODF Converter for reading Office Open XML formats?
Or does the more recent code from Go-OO cover reading as well as writing? |

In NeoOffice 3.1.1 we use the OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 plus Go-oo modifications for both import and export of OOXML files.
We dropped the ODF Converter as I saw very little new development occurring in that project and when it worked, it was quite slow and, in some cases, would hang completely.
