FYI. I just released Neo/J 1.1 RC "Patch-1". Details of what's included in the patch is available here:

Patrick, do you want to continue announcing patches on VersionTracker and MacUpdate? I'll do those shortly if that's the case.
(I've updated the listing on Freshmeat, since it's developer-focused and plays nicely with our updates )

I don't think updates are needed for "Patch-1" as the Indic text support and colors aren't huge changes to Neo/J.
Instead, is it possible to bug Apple to update their mirror at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/neoofficej.html? They still at Neo/J 1.1 Beta.
Also, on the freshmeat project page, can you try getting the following updated?:
1. The "OS X Package" is pointing to the old Neo/C download. The URL should, instead, point to the following URL:
http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/download.php
2. The project title says "NeoOffice - Cocoa branch". It should be just "NeoOffice".
Thanks,
Patrick |

Sorry, that was an omission on my part in all of the excitement (and because the other Apple listing, Mac Products Guide, only accepts "released" products). I'll fix that.

I've been meaning to email them about making the Neo/J branch appear as the default branch rather than the Neo/C branch; that should fix those issues (the "front-page" announcements I believe point to the Neo/J branch page directly)....

FYI. Bug 694 was filed and it was such a simple fix that I reuploaded the patch with fix. The new patch is called "Patch-1a" and is available here:

Just a general note:
Since the patches are small, I think it's perfectly reasonable for us to only update mirrors and torrents for "major" releases...e.g. the next major release will either be an RC2 or a Final
FWIW, the OOo BT project dude e-mailed me to find a torrent link that he could add to their project page. This was unsolicited and, hopefully, is an indicator that we're a bit more accepted at OOo!

Patrick, it might be an idea to hold out until Open Office 1.1.5 is released before announcing a definitive release of Neo/J, so you could 1.1.5 in the release: the main difference will be the renaming of the file formats to the OASIS extensions (odt instead of sxw etc), but I think it would make a lot of people more comfortable to get ahead with Neo/J. |

That forward compatibility will definitely be an issue, but what is the timeframe for 1.1.5? There should at least be another Neo RC to see if that code brings in new bugs so this could take a while.. _________________ "What do you think of Western Civilization?"

That sounds wonderful. However, I think that releasing updates as torrents can help. It took about five tries to get the -9, -10 and -11 patches to the beta release because they went over the 10 MB line. This is due to the quality of communications. Not everyone has DSL/Cable connections nor do we want/need them.
My opinion is that all releases should go out to the torrent and maybe one or two mirrors.

3-5 business days and Apple should have 1.1 RC

Neo/J is now the default branch of the NeoOffice project and is displayed when one accesses the NeoOffice project at freshmeat.

I did a quick scan of the tags in the OOo CVS repository and I did not see any OOo 1.1.5 tags. I suspect that a OOo 1.1.5 was a suggestion, not a reality. My impression is that all effort by Sun's engineers is focussed on getting OOo 2.0 finished.

I think I've seen public statements from OOo that there will be an OOo 1.1.x release to provide compatability with the new 2.0 document formats.
(edit: here's one by Daniel Carrera, who is a member of OOo's governing Community Council. Presumably he can speak with authority....) However, since OOo 2.0 is so far behind (it was supposed to be released in March!), I agree with Patrick--all of the engineering effort is currently focused on getting 2.0 complete. After that's done, then 1.1.5 will perhaps arrive.
Ed has previously said that his next step is native widgets, and given the amount of time it will take for OOo 2.0 to become stable, get the same level of Mac support as was present in 1.1.2, and then for Patrick to move Neo/J to that codebase, we've theoretically slated an additional release from the 1.1.x branch for Ed's N*F work (Neo/J 1.5) in the interim. If OOo 1.1.5 appears, then Neo/J 1.5 can be based off of it, and by that time OOo 2.0/OpenDocument formats will just be reaching wide acceptance. So Neo/J users should be covered by the time they have to start dealing with OpenDocument files. At least this is generally what we outlined/discussed in December when we decided to do a Release Candidate based off of 1.1.4.
(All of this is time/resources permitting, of course; neither Ed nor Patrick nor OOo have set any parts of these plans in stone and agreed to do them or else... )

I was asking to myself: 'cause moving to 1.1.4 or 1.1.5 could give us benefit, but disavantage too (see bug 681 for example), is it possibile to have different neooffice/j 1.1.3 and neooffice/j 1.1.4 (and neooffice/j 1.1.5 et ceterae) to choose the best for the user, or this is a too heavy re-coding?

I don't think you need to worry. I will be truly amazed if there is ever an OOo 1.1.5 release. I have found no statements by any of Sun's Hamburg engineers about releasing OOo 1.1.5 so I have to assume that OOo 1.1.5 is merely a rumor (or wish) that someone has started.
