|
In the text document, I can save and add a password. I'd love to be able to save (or save as...) my database file with a password to protect opening it, perhaps even to protect editing it (that is, two different levels of password). This is extremely important if one creates a database to store passwords, software registration, credit card numbers, booky numbers (), etc.
Thanks. _________________ Stuke

If you're interested in security, the best way to do this is through using a database backend that allows for user login and encryption (MySQL, Postgre, Oracle, etc.). Base is designed primarily to be a client, not to handle the security and scaling needs of the database itself. While HSQLDB is a convenient Java RDBMS to be embedded within OOo, it will never approach the security and scalability of other open source and commercial solutions.

According to this thread in the oocuv forum, Base does not support password protection of embedded databases, although it looks like you can use password protected back ends as Ed suggests.

|
Can the front end document be protected. For example, can one protect the NeoOffice database document which contains the forms and tables (and other items) from being opened? Just like a word or spreadsheet file can be protected with password. That's all I'm looking for in terms of protection. _________________ Stuke

My read of the thread I provided above is that it does not.
Depending on what you need, you could store the odb file in an encrypted disk image. But that would only work on a mac, I think.

Is there some way of embedding a base form in a writer doc, and passwording the writer doc? Just a thought...

It probably wouldn't matter, as the form itself doesn't contain the data (AFAIK)… |

You can save a form as a separate Writer doc and password protect it. But I don't think you can embed an odb in a Writer doc.

You're correct. The OLE embedding (Insert > Object > OLE Object) only covers the pre-2.0 components (Chart/Impress/Calc/Draw/Formula). OOo's internal engineering for new components isn't consistent and doesn't offer the functionality of the old, necessarily.

Yeah. One would think that if all the other documents can be embedded in each other Base should be the same...but no dice. It's written totally differently than the other components

But it seems consistent with the scope of OOo Base, which is not limited to single-file, locally-stored databases, an can also administer server-based databases (as I understand it). Being able to password-protect a Base .odb document and not being able to do the same with other databases that Base can access would be confusing to some users. |
