PostPosted: Fri Jun 13, 2008 1:47 am    Post subject: NeoOffice 2.2.3 Installer just stops...

Folks,

I have been a VERY happy NeoOffice user since version 1.1 - congratulations to all those who dedicate their time to produce such excellent software.

I have, unfortunately, to report two problems that have prevented me from using NeoOffice lately:

First, my machine is a PowerBook G4 1.5GHz with 2GB ram. I was until recently running OS X 10.3.9 - in the last month I upgraded to 10.5 with NO problems and, most recently, I applied the 10.5.3 security update. That is when things went wrong I think.

1/ NeoOffice would not start properly after applying the 10.5.3 security update. The application would appear to load but there was no screen presentation - so I could not switch to it - but it appeared as a running app in Force Quit.

2/ I decided to re-install and downloaded the 2.2.3 installer. This _appears_ to run satisfactorily until the stage where I have the message "Finishing Installation - Install time remaining: About a minute". It never finishes (well, after 24 hours is has not finished).

I have tried fully de-installing the app following the instructions here: http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/Uninstalling_NeoOffice but this does not affect the outcome.

I should be most grateful for any thoughts as to how this can be cured in the short term as my neo-office documents are currently unreadable by the remaining apps!

Best Regards

Patrick just addressed this issue in a few other recent threads and possible issues with OS X's dmg loader or some such thing.

https://trinity.neooffice.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6167

I believe this is it.

Hmmm. So these installer problems started happening after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.x? Then it might be a system hack problem.

Can you read the following NeoWiki article and follow the link in that article for finding and disabling any system hacks?:

http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/Leopard_Upgrade_Issues

Do you find any system hacks? If so, does disabling them and rebooting fix the issue?

Patrick,

Nope - no system hacks on this machine whatsoever. Checked the console log which contains nothing of any relevance.

OK. Then can you rerun the installer and when it reaches the "Finishing Installation - Install time remaining: About a minute" stage, wait about 5 minutes and then do the following steps:

1. Select the installer's Window :: Installer Log menu
2. In the dialog that appears, select Show Everything
3. Scroll to the bottom, copy the last 20 or so lines, and post them here

Further to my last I have checked for non-accessible remote disks per the e-mail from K-9 - nothing found.

Any other ideas?

OK. Force quit the installer.

It appears that you have installed enough of NeoOffice that the latest patch installer will work. So after you force quit, can you try installing Patch 6? Does the Patch 6 installer complete?

The above errors might explain the problem. The above errors indicate that the Mac OS X installer tool cannot find its own files. This usually indicates that something got corrupted or failed to install when you upgraded your machine to Mac OS X 10.5.x.

If the Mac OS X installer tool's files are corrupted or missing, this is a serious problem and the only way that I know of to fix this is to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 and hope that it reinstalls the corrupted or missing files.

That may not even work and, in that case, you will need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.5 using the "Archive and Install" option so that Mac OS X does a clean (and complete) installation.

Yuck Sad

Thanks for the assistance Patrick. One last chance - could this just be a permissions issue - should I fix permissions or just go ahead and reinstall as you suggest?

I don't have a problem with the reinstallation except that is is required in the first place - starts to smack of window$...

I'm very grateful for the time that you and others have taken to assist.

Cheers

That cannot hurt and is a safe operation so definitely try that first.

Yeah, the Mac OS X 10.5 upgrade has caused more than a few people some pain. Sad

I didn't get very excited about the new features in Leopard (not enough disc space for Time Machine), so I decided to skip it. I am curious about Snow Leopard, but I will stay with Tiger until then. And I am getting happier about that by the day Smile.

Really, there's nothing wrong with clean and/or pre- install of Leopard. The upgrade code seems buggy though, based on what I've read.

BTW, Leopard just feels like a more refined version of Tiger. The new features themselves have nothing exceptional - although they're a plus, especially Time Machine, which is easier to use than any of the Windows backup solutions I've set up for my family - but all the small details that have been changed here and there make it a more pleasant experience than Tiger for me.

That being said, going from Leopard to Tiger isn't as depressing as rebooting into Panther.
