Howdy. I hope that this might help the new version of NeoOffice. I ran across a problem in OpenOffice.org 3.0 that is not present in NeoOffice (based on OO.org 2.2), concerning cursor focus when inserting a footnote.

I have used a wide variety of word processors (Mellel, Nisus Writer Pro, Papyrus, RagTime, etc.). Whenever I insert a footnote, the cursor moves to the footnote and is ready to type. However, in OO.org 3.0 Writer, when I insert the footnote, the Style Palette becomes active and the cursor goes to the Style Palette with Footnote style highlighted, rather than putting the cursor into the footnote to type. This seems wrong and inconsistent with fluid writing.

I renamed the user folder in Application Support and began testing. There were four sub folders that caused problems. However, even with a pristine user folder, I discovered that the problem occurred when the the stye palette was open. If I closed the style palette, then the focus shifted properly.

My point in posting here is to let you know of the problem, and hopefully it won't show up in NeoOffice 3.0.

Hello shades -

I have a copy of NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access test build and was able to check this out. You will be happy to know that NeoOffice does not move access to the Style and Formatting palette when inserting a footnote. Behavior remains the same as it did in NeoOffice 2.2.5 with the cursor moving to the footnote.

The reason that both NeoOffice 2.2.5 and NeoOffice 3.0 Early Access do not grab focus and OpenOffice 3.0 does is that the NeoOffice has implemented all floating toolbars using native Mac OS X floating windows. This was a big feature that we added in NeoOffice 2.2.4.

In contrast, OpenOffice.org 3.0 uses regular document windows for all floating toolbars so you get the undesirable focus grabbing when a toolbar window opens or you press Command-~.

Thanks, guys.

It is interesting that apparently this is not a problem for Windows and Linux users with OO.org 3.0.
