Yes, you can do that. However, it takes a few steps:
1. If you already have several lines with numbering turned on (that is, 1., 2., 3., etc.), highlight all those lines and select the Format :: Bullets and Numbering menu
2. In the dialog that appears, click on the Position tab and select "2" in the level panel and then click on the Numbering Type tab and select the panel with a), b), c), etc. in it and click the OK button. If you have already inserted "level 2" lines in the selected lines of your document, they will be renumbered as a), b), c), etc.
3. After changing the "level 2" format, you can then insert new "level 2" lines by input lines as "level 1" lines (that is, 1., 2., 3., etc.) and then selecting the lines that you want convert to "level 2" lines. The Bullets and Numbering toolbar should appear. In that toolbar, select the Demote One Level toolbar button.
Does that allow you to add "level 2" lines with numbering set to a), b), c), etc.?
