Neooffice will save a .csv correctly, but when I open any .csv it comes up as trash. I'm using ver 3.1.1.

Have you installed NeoOffice 3.1.1 Patch 1? I ask because I fixed a bug in the CSV import options dialog that appears when you open a .csv file in that patch.

To check if you have Patch 1 installed, select the Help :: About NeoOffice menu and if you have the patch installed, it will show "NeoOffice 3.1.1 Patch 1" as the version. If you do not have the patch installed, can you install the patch from the NeoOffice patch download page and tell us if there is any change?

If the problem still occurs with Patch 1 installed, can you attach a sample .csv file that we can use to try to reproduce the problem? You can attach a sample file using the steps in this forum post.

Also, can you be more specific about what you mean by "trash"?

If you can take a screenshot of the result, you can attach it to your post by following the instructions here.

Please don't attach a screen snapshot as we cannot do any troubleshooting with a screen snapshot. Instead, please attach a sample .csv file that we can use to try and reproduce the problem.

I am using v 3.1.1 Patch 1.

By trash I mean unreadable characters. I can open the .csv with Open Office. I've attached the files.

The problem is that you have set the Character Set option at the top to the import dialog to "Unicode". Also, check the "Separated by" checkbox instead of the "Fixed width" checkbox.

Changing it to "Unicode (UTF-8)". Unicode means each two characters in a file are interpreted as a single character whereas "Unicode (UTF-8)" is the format that NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org save .csv files by default.

Does changing the Character Set option to "Unicode (UTF-8)" fix the problem for you?

No problem. Character sets are always tricky to deal with.

One thing you might want to be aware of is if you import .csv files that have accented characters and the file was not created by NeoOffice, using "Unicode (UTF-8)" may cause the accented characters to be replaced by the wrong characters.

If this happens to you, I recommend that you try changing the Character Set option to "Western European (ISO-8859-1)" as that character set is commonly used by many programs that create .csv files.
