Today I opened NeoOffice to discover that all my customisation has disappeared and it has reverted to the default values. What could have caused such a thing? |

This will happen if you or some program deletes the ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1 folder.

It seems the foler had got deleted but since I did not delete it - what program could have done that? Or perhaps that is out ot the scope of this discussion.... |

The thing happened again: I closed NeoOffice because it seemed to have slowed down and when I opened it again, I received invitation to register (as if that was the first time I use the applicaiton), was redirected to the patch download page but when I got back to Neo window, all my customisations were gone...
I wander if anybody have experienced anything like that... |

Can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Console application and see if there are any messages that before with the word "Error:" or "Usage:"?

Yes, there are lots of error messages with Neo involved they are (as far as I can see all like this:
2005-03-13 23:30:22.969 runner[1914] Unable to touch /var/tmp/.NeoOfficeJ.patch/./Contents/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office: No such file or directory
but also some other variations of that. But in case this is connected wit hthe installation of the last patch - customisation disappeared before installation |

Those error messages are normal and are from the patch installation.
My theory is that the OOo code is, for some unknown reason, invoking the /Applications/NeoOfficeJ.app/Contents/MacOS/setup command (which is run every time you start Neo/J) with the "-repair" argument. "-repair" deletes your ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1 folder and recreates it with default value.
In theory, the OOo code should only use the "-repair" when one or more of the files in the ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1 folder are corrupted.
I assume that you just installed "Patch-8". If your user preferences disappear again, immediately open the /Applications/Utilities/Console application and post any error messages in this forum topic.

Not related to the console error messages, but also check to make sure you aren't running out of disk space on your startup/home folder disk. When OS X runs out of space it's notoriously bad at saving preferences; I would suspect that NeoJ also wouldn't write out its config files properly if there's no room left on the drive.

I lost all my preferences (for no apparent reason) and will have to painfully re-establish them.
Is there a particular file (or files) that store preferences and that can be copied and saved somewhere in case this happens again?

Make backups of the entire NeoOfficeJ-1.1 folder in your ~/Library/ folder. This is where all your user specific preferences etc are saved. _________________ PBG4, 1.5GHz, SuperDrive, 1GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, 5400rpm 80GB HD, MacOS X 10.4.5
