NeoOffice/J won't start

Hi,
On OSX 10.3.8 on 667Mhz PB with 512k
Was using NeoOffice/J fine for several months, but now the icon appears in the Dock and bounces but no splash screen appears then the dock icon disappears.

Installing the Beta-Patch-8 hasn't changed the behaviour.

From your crash log, it is clear that your Java 1.3.1 installation is corrupted or missing. Did you delete or change the Java 1.3.1 files in /System/Library/Framworks/JavaVM/Versions/1.3.1?

Other Java apps run ok, but does NeoOffice/J specifically require the 1.3.1 files? Is there any way to tell if they are corrupted?

Neo/J explicitly loads Java 1.3.1. Since Java 1.3.1 is still there on your machine, you might want to try the following:

1. Run a Java application using Java 1.3.1 by executing the following command:
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.3.1/Commands/java

2. If step 1 fails, then Java 1.3.1 is corrupted. In this case, use your Mac OS X installation CD to install any missing OS files.

Editing the pList to make ArgoUML run with Java 1.3.1 kind of worked. The app ran but some of GUI widgets didn't render correctly.

So try running both applications using Java 1.3.1 but also add the following JVM options:

-Xbootclasspath/a:/Applications/NeoOfficeJ.app/Contents/MacOS/classes/vcl.jar
-Dcom.apple.hwaccel=false
-Dcom.apple.hwaccellist=
-Xrs
-Xmx512m

These are the JVM options that Neo/J uses. If these cause problems, then keep removing an option until it works and let me know which option is causing the problem.

You should be testing a Java program. Neo/J is not a Java program. It is a C++ program that loads Java do test a regular Java program like you did earlier. In other words, I want you to run a Java program that you know works but with Neo/J's JVM options. The idea is that if your Java program chokes with one of Neo/J's JVM options, we can isolate why Java isn't working for Neo/J.

Does that make sense?

Ignore my last few questions. I think I found the source of the problem. Bug 595 (http://bugzilla.neooffice.org/bug.php?op=show&bugid=595&pos=) will cause Java to crash. I don't know why this is so. But for now, try the simple solution in the last comment of this bug and see if that works. Apparently, really simple custom settings in your Java.xcu file can really mess up Java.

Installed Patch 9 but no fix (still aborts on start).

But following your advice in the bug mentioned (making ~/Library/NeoOfficeJ-1.1/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Java.xcu unavailable) fixed the problem.
